i love weird adaptations. chris nolan’s changes to the odyssey are controversial. but i like them a lot, because they make the movie more interesting and modern. we exist!

Kory BingThe “best” thing about genAI (the quotes are doing heavy work here) is that it’s really lowered the bar on getting into hand-made art. Literally anything you make is better than ai. There’s never been a better time to throw away your fear and start learning that craft you’ve always wanted to learn.
ICE has killed another person.
I'm neither an instigator nor an influencer, but I am a publisher of independent media who relies on social media for his business and I very much want this place to be something more than just a hang out space for those of us with different goals. I hope it continues to grow
John ScalziI should be clear that the architecture of Bluesky makes it the social media place I most like to be. I'm not on social media to be an influencer or instigator; I want to hang out with folks and have an enjoyable time. This place delivers on that. I hope it continues to do so for a long time.
Twitter made Hamilton happen, imo. Now it’s up to bluesky to get Hadestown mainstreamed lol
And to be clear I do not have purity tests for my hosting institutions. Few unis are really meeting the moment, but those that are gleefully tossing academic freedom to the political winds don’t deserve my time
I recognize that organisers bear no blame for their leaders’ decisions, but I don’t see how we can keep lending our credibility to these institutions as if they are still legitimate
Opinions on the ethics of pulling out of speaking events at unis where academic freedom has just abruptly been killed? I just had to, but organisers were not understanding despite it being 3+ months away, with no costs for me yet incurred. Apparently we are all just supposed to carry on as usual?
Haitians with TPS status forced to wear ankle monitors or else be detained immediately. Blue Ash, Ohio is near Cincinnati.
OLIYA SCOOTERCASTER"They tell me - if I want to take 2600 dollars and go to Haiti, or if I would stay here and be arrested and put that ankle monitor on my leg" Haitian asylum seeker with TPS status speaks after check in at Blue Ash Ohio ICE office.
This is an extremely fun read.

Reason number 19,208,138 we love librarians:
Lisa RabeyOK. Since I'm a librarian and I must ORGANIZE ALL THE THINGS, I took all the titles mentioned by @tressiemcphd.bsky.social, @ali-alkhatib.com, and the Library Freedom Project and put them in a single list on bookshop.org: bookshop.org/wishlists/53.... (I did not coin "data politics," Tressie did.)
A standard casket is 7 ft long. If you took 1.2 million COVID dead &—presuming a standard casket for each—laid the first casket down in DC & kept laying them down, casket after casket, you'd reach Denver. And that's not counting the millions who only barely survived. One of them is me. 2/
🧵This regime is surely guilty of a lot of evil, but there's a special cast to the evil of denying a reality THROUGH WHICH WE ALL LIVED that stole at *least* 1.2 million of us. That's more people than the populations of St. Louis, New Orleans, Boise, & Anchorage, combined. One of them was my mom.
Gabriel BossletRFK Jr said these words today on national television "There were ICUs that were empty all over the country including in New York at the height (of the pandemic)" hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha You are a fucking idiot hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha <sobs silently>
This is a ridiculous ruling that suggests labeling commodities accurately is a violation of free speech 🙄 i hate this timeline
GristIs the recycling symbol free speech? A judge just ruled it could be.
i personally don't think child molestetion should be required to play volleyball
Gillian BranstetterAn initiative on the ballot in Washington state in November would require all athletes seeking to play girl's sports from kindergarten to high school to undergo "genetic screening, a testosterone-levels test, or an examination of their reproductive anatomy" before they can play
Anyway, I made a reading list in public. I try to avoid doing that. The Twitter “syllabus” wars scarred me. It’s gonna be a touchy few days.
It will depress you! Sorry about that but it’s kind of my jam. I selected well-written books, some of them are even wryly funny at times — if you come from a culture with macabre humor. Still, the issue is big, complex, and scary. All the more reason for us to face it together.
John RobinsonA reading list that I know will depress me, but one that also seems vital to understand (and fight this version of) the future. From the brilliant @tressiemcphd.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2026/08/03/o...
