Get rid of the cars and it won’t be overwhelmed. Cars are what take up too much space.

“We all need to respect the space of others.” Cars are given way too much space, public and private, in relation to the number of people they carry.

“I am trying to protect pedestrians from being overrun from bikes, scooters & running groups on sidewalks.” The reason the sidewalk is so busy is because it’s constrained, in order to give too much space to cars. Take away the car space, and the “problems” go away.

Drivers still drive on the sidewalk. How do you think they get from driveways to the street, and vice versa? Do you think drivers look 👀 for pedestrians when they drive on the sidewalk? They do not. Their eyes are focused on the car traffic only.

Yet you survived these incidents. Cars kill 1,300 people a year in Illinois, plus serious injuries, plus billions in property damage. A bicyclist has killed one pedestrian in Illinois this century.

If they closed Michigan Avenue to cars between Roosevelt Road and Wacker Drive, the bus detours onto Michigan Avenue would be fine. Allowing cars on Michigan Avenue during Lollapalooza is a bad idea. They’re dangerous and in the way.

Bike riders don’t kill people.

You put the bollards in one place - Thorndale Avenue, let’s say. The CTA can lower the bollards to get through. Nobody else gets through. If this exasperates drivers, fvck ‘em. Ride the bus then. We’ve given too much space to cars. We have to take it back.

You can’t possibly involve police, or you’ll get minimal compliance, and occasional enforcement that results in somebody being shot. Bollards needed.

You put up bollards. CTA buses would have a transponder to lower the bollards.

You might have to wait until at least Tuesday before you go down there with your grocery bags.

The problem is cars. They hog up too much space, relative to the number of people they carry. Every “problem” involving pedestrians, bicycles and scooters would disappear if there were no cars.
