Peat in its natural state is fire resistant. Healthy boglands protect adjacent forests and grasslands from drought and fire. But under a warming climate and mismanagement, peat fires can wreak havoc and burn for months. Important thread by @davidrvetter.bsky.social

I join you from the Blaenavon wildfire in Southeast Wales, brought to you by BP, Shell and Equinor. Though it does not look dramatic, the fire has been out of control for days - for a very particular reason. 🧵

it was only fairly recently that I found out that locusts aren't an entirely separate species but rather a thing that happens to grasshoppers. Basically it's berserk mode.

TIL grasshoppers transform into locusts within hours (like, change color and shit) when they gather closely while feeding and brush into sensitive hairs on one another’s bodies. They then go into a mating, migrating and feeding frenzy. So basically the biggest, most terrifying orgies in the world.

Oh no. Cairngorms NP is one of my favorite places. It contains the last remaining large stands of ancient Caledonian forest, home to red squirrels, capercaillies, and other rare critters, not to mention deeply rooted human communities. I spent many happy times there. www.bbc.com/news/article...
