Maybe instead of setting up whole new expensive and bureaucratic systems to review refugee status, tax refugees and replace the appeals tribunal, the Home Office should focus on sorting out it's own decision making processes.

Ministerial positions at the Home Office becoming clearer. Dan Jarvis returns as Security Minister while Sarah Jones and Lord Hanson retain their roles. Anna Turley becomes Minister of State, moving from Labour Party Chair, presumably replacing Alex Norris. Nothing on Mike Tapp or Natalie Fleet yet.

No arrivals by small boats for the last 10 days now. As of yesterday, 12,469 people had arrived so far this year across the Channel, down over 11,000 (47%) on the same time last year. More than 10% down on 2023 as well, which was when crossings were, by comparison to other years, lower.

I hadn't noticed until I read @sonial77.bsky.social's substack that the immigration rules changes laid yesterday contain a significant change to the asylum process (despite the explanatory note saying it's "minor"). From 3 August, people can be refused asylum without a substantive interview.

New analysis from @refugeecouncil.bsky.social shows the huge cost to the taxpayer of poor quality Home Office asylum decisions. We estimate it will cost between £974 million and £1.2 billion supporting people currently in the appeals backlog who will have their initial refusal overturned.
