It's depressing that this moved me so much, but did. First time I've heard a politician praise a group of immigrants, without caveat, for a long while.

Andy Burnham, "To me, carers should be the best paid people in society, not the worst" "Many people from other countries have been caring for my dad" Andy Burnham praises migrants to the UK who care for our elderly, a stark contrast to Keir-island-of-strangers-Starmer

I'm in the South of France , where I was introduced to a French person with the words 'and this lady is from England.' 'Yes,' said the French person, dryly, 'I can see that for myself.'

It is quite strange how little the actual public inquiry we're having into the UK's Covid response - the one that's publishing in-depth reports every few months - factors into the "you're not even allowed to ask these questions" complaints. We are, in fact, officially asking these questions!

One thing I would say about Covid is it's just utterly bizarre that we are having conversations about mental health, youth unemployment, our frankly weird and slightly scary politics, various other odd social changes and it just never comes up. Yet, it is a massive social force in this decade.

RefUK, RW media, & Eurofash are plainly trying to whip up a panic about this. Any serious report must begin by explaining that Ceuta is in Africa - not mainland Spain - and 48k+ of the 50k crossers were already returned. It is frightening how many still don't know this. England received only 7% of the long-term average rainfall for July. Southern England, just 1%. Factoid: There has been a weather station in Kew Gardens for 155 years. This July was the first month ever to record 0mm of rain. Tomorrow, London will again hit 30C+ www.theguardian.com/environment/...

The counterfactual isn't a world in which more kids got infected with covid & were fine. It's the key worker parents they brought it home to. Putting all essential services under more pressure. Including the NHS. It's potential variants which were able to evolve with more spread. ...it's a lot!

People really do project knowledge backwards. All the decisions which were made during the pandemic were made with hospitals at capacity, people dying and becoming severely disabled, and no knowledge of what future variants would emerge or how dangerous they might be.

I can’t believe that Reform UK turned out to be financed by a bunch of money laundering fronts for Russia. It’s just so unexpected.
