Cities that refuse to tow away cars left where they shouldn't be are making a policy announcement that they support this.

A great example of why the "make eye contact with drivers and wear reflective clothing" advice for pedestrians and cyclists is bad. Nothing short of physically limiting where and how drivers can operate their vehicles will work.

I was doored a few months ago. Broken thumb, permanent damage, though it could have been worse. Despite this experience, since people with power prioritize storage for car owners above safety for everyone else, I'm still forced to ride in the door zone, basically waiting for it to happen again.

This is a really important framing for conversations about congestion pricing. Drivers are both already paying *and* inflicting a high cost on our communities. A critical part of reducing car dependency is understanding how it hurts all of us.

Cities dismantled their tram networks to become “motor cities of the future”. The result? You could travel further within 30 mins via public transport in 1957 than you can in 2026. Cities are seeking billions to rebuild networks. Incredible piece of work this.

Totally! And they're helpful even here in Birmingham, where despite a car culture that chokes the life out of this city day after day, the powers that be are adamant about preventing positive change. But Amsterdam, Paris, etc., show what's possible, which we can at least continuously point out!

Urban governments might be a different matter, I hope. And I think that local leaders who take meaningful action can have a positive impact not just on their own cities and towns but also in potentially embarrassing others into doing something. This kind of thing....

Wherever you live, there's no way local authorities don't know about the transformation of Paris by now. And they could follow its lead, but they are consciously choosing not to.
