It's interesting that when I was an undergrad, 25 years ago, the construct, 'the culture industry,' read as dull, safe, platitudionous even, whereas today the same set of claims feel vital and urgent, maybe even alarming to the 1st-time reader.

How did people who take themselves to be broadly on the left become so convinced that any critique of mass/popular culture is morally, even politically bad? It's obvs a minor part, but still a part I think of understanding the last decade.
