Honestly don't! I also have good childhood memories, but they're terrible.

And I'm not referring to Dahl's antisemitism and general unpleasantness - just that the books are bad on their own terms. Boring, stupid, clunky. Mostly plotless. Trying to do things with language that he's not really able to do.
