Oh, and still almost no *national* media and political coverage… The Tyneside coastal communities, who have been doing back-breaking work round the clock to clear as many nurdles as possible, won’t get answers and a proper clean-up till this spill gets more attention. Read through thread for more.

An hour on the Fish Quay, working with my hands and a dustpan and brush. No idea how many nurdles this is. There are about 60 people working down here, all doing similar.

Damaged containers cleared of nurdles, but meanwhile a billion of them are washing up the Tyne, onto our beaches and into the sea. This is perhaps one of the biggest plastic pollution events in the UK. And yet there’s almost no national coverage.

Lots of action on the North Tyneside coast again today, trying to collect as many of the billion spilled nurdles as possible, in the absence of an organised, council/corporate-led effort. This is what the Fish Quay, right at the mouth of the Tyne looked like this morning (not my pics).

I haven’t made it down this morning but there are dozens of folk on Tynemouth Longsands, clearing some of the billion nurdles bit by bit. Still time to pop down this morning, or between 4 and 8 this afternoon/evening after the next high tide. All info here: nurdle-hub-ne.vercel.app/announcements

A local volunteer has pulled together all the info being shared locally in terms of timings, priorities, techniques etc for clearing nurdles from the North Tyneside beaches: nurdle-hub-ne.vercel.app

A couple of hours on Tynemouth Longsands (in the rain) with 8-10 volunteers and we gathered about 20kg of nurdles, using dustpans and brushes, homemade mesh bags and big buckets. Join the WhatsApp group below for more info on local volunteer efforts.

If you’re in the north-east and/or have north-east followers, please share this; the tides over the next week make the clean-up critical. The info below covers North Tyneside but there are similar volunteer networks in South Tyneside.

25 tonnes of nurdles, more than 1 billion nurdles, were spilled into the Tyne last week and are washing up on our beaches, north and south of the Tyne. Likely one of the largest ever plastic pollution events in the UK. There is remarkably little mention of this on here.

Spent the afternoon at the Tish Murtha (and Kuba Ryniewicz) exhibition at Baltic. So many fabulous - and poignant - photos, but struck, as always with Murtha’s work, by what a tough deal the communities of the north-east have had for so long.

On a rare old metro and it’s smelly and hot, and far from the smoothest or quietest ride. The new ones may not be perfect but they’re a whole lot better.

There’s a little girl playing out in our backlane (I think she’s scooting] and every few minutes she asks, “Daddy, any cars?” [There are no cars in our backlane - it’s too narrow and the corners too tight.]
