When your business model is not profit but propaganda on behalf of fascists, being popular no longer matters.

Foreign students spend $50 billion per year in fees and associated expenses, which enter the balance of payments as export earnings, something Trump claims he wants to increase. Higher ed earns more from exports this way than the steel and semiconductor industries combined. Ironic.

They’re trying to make sure students like my husband—who got his bachelors and PhD here and then went on to be a prof at MIT before moving to industry (& his bro who did same path, diff school)—will either never choose the US in the first place or will take their years of training & skill and leave.

This is also a backdoor way to kill most foreign student enrolment in American universities, which rely heavily on those revenues to stay afloat. Just another nail in the coffin of their systematic destruction of higher education, which they see as a direct threat to their authoritarian agenda.

Settting aside the racism and xenophobia, it's also massively counterproductive: getting foreign students to stay here and work is a win for the US and for the graduates. Every degree a US school awards to a foreign student should have a work visa & permanent resident application stapled to it.

Really is a great example of how backward the thinking is for so much of this administration. "Oh, you want to bring your skills, intellect and drive to the US to help our economy and our communities? We are going to punish you for that!" (I'm giving them too much credit: It's all just a scam)

It’s an outrage. They cut the budgets, undermine the public health officials at every turn, and now scapegoat them in front of the nation to draw attention away from their own failures. Failures caused by both stupidity and a lack of empathy. Pathetic that such callow fools hold elected office.

The truly irresponsible thing about a poll like this is that WaPo knows that not about 2% of Americans have any actual knowledge of what the DSA is and what their policies are. Another 28-38% say “socialism bad” and the rest are just tuned out on the issue and are responding based on instinct.
