In every time, in every place, the deeds of man remain the same. (He/Him). WEBSITE: https://nathangoldwag.wordpress.com/

This is an extremely good essay; my only criticism of it would be that the conclusion ("shooting a cop is not a particularly effective tactic and will probably get you arrested or killed") is too self-evident to warrant this much analysis, but it turns out that's not true.

Liberal Currents

"The material action—shooting a cop—combined with the aesthetics (vandalism, graffiti, disorder, guys in ski masks…)—together meant that it was easy for the government to paint them as terrorists, and difficult for them to present themselves to a mass audience as sympathetic protesters."

I believe I now have precisely one hundred churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples documented here. 😄

Now including a map of everything featured on this account, both so people can follow along with my journey and so I can keep track of it all. Will be updated periodically. 😄

There really just isn't much evidence that El-Sayed is a worse general election candidate than Stevens, and I'm saying that as someone who is very skeptical of the "silent progressive majority" electability arguments.

Man, I don't know anymore.

You should probably not bring a gun to a protest, yes, because the odds of you accomplishing anything useful with it are pretty slim.

This is from a month ago, but I think @joshtpm.bsky.social really nails the fundamental issue with Mattyism, speaking as someone who is very skeptical of a lot of the progressive/populist electability arguments: At some point you have to actually engage with the actual voters of your coalition.

"Belle" reminded me of "Cosmic Princess Kaguya!" which had a very similar premise, was much stupider, took itself much less seriously, and was also much better imho.

Cai

"Your Name" and "Belle" were both efforts to show non-Ghibli, non-Kon anime films could be real movies. And they both failed. They are absolutely terrible.

People are very allergic to acknowledging actual distinctions of interest and belief; but if you support the policies Gadi Eisenkot, Naftali Bennett, or Yair Lapid you are opposed to what Mamdani and his supporters believe in. Which is fine, it's a free country, but there's no point lying about it.

Alex

also, if your proposed alternative to protesting is to “make clear that we stand with Israelis like former IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, former prime ministers Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid” who all oppose a Palestinian state, describing yourself as a liberal Zionist is just window dressing

I agree that the role of AIPAC in US politics is often overstated, in the same way that the NRA serves as a synecdoche for a broad-based collection of interests, but the thing about spending $30 million on an election is that people are going to assume you have some kind of stake in winning it.

There are a lot of people who were capable of being open-minded when Arabs and Muslims were simply the *subject* of US policy but whose response to those communities having an active role in American politics on par with other ethnic and faith groups has been to totally lose their shit.

Asher Elbein

I'ts hard to escape the impression that a certain faction of the Democratic Party just straight up does not believe that Arabs specifically -- and perhaps Muslims generally -- have a place as active players in American politics

"The people who work on farms often don't own them" is something that would have been completely intuitive to 99% of people for 99% of human history but is completely unintelligible to the people who make US public policy.

Sarah Taber

A very serious Rural Politico once told me "Dems have to go to farmer meetings! We gotta be where the people are!" I was in fact in a farmer meeting at that very moment! So I live-texted him the meeting. They were complaining that they want indentured workers that they don't have to pay or feed.

Pretty standard for philosemites, tbh.

It's especially galling that Haley Stevens is portraying herself as the great protector of the Jews in her campaign against a Muslim candidate, given that in 2022 she beat a wonderful Jewish Congressman in a costly primary in part by accusing him of being insufficiently pro-Israel.
