"Your Name" and "Belle" were both efforts to show non-Ghibli, non-Kon anime films could be real movies. And they both failed. They are absolutely terrible.

Was Your Name not popular? I only watched it years after the fact but it felt like it was all anyone talked about when it came out.

They were both movies I went to in theaters based on coverage in non-anime-centered media and both times I was so mad

I suppose for good reason. Weathering With You I think was alright. But Suzume was definitely a dropped ball for being…weird.

The only real gripe you can pin on Belle is the climax. No, Hosoda, you can't have the bad guy "getting scared and giving up". It doesn't work like that.

More than Ghibli, you can really feel with Belle that they were aiming to do a Disney movie on top of the "Hosoda sphere" (a term I just learned). They even hired Jin Kim to do the heroine's design. Plus the big showpiece songs. Those on themselves make the movie, regardless of plot kerfuffling.

The problem is this effort was done by people who wanted to mainstream anime, and therefore they in no meaningful way break away from how mainstream anime is in fact garbage. Robot Carnival it fuckin ain't

Shinkai (Your Name) is a notoriously bad writer and is proof if you make pretty enough BGs, people will apparently forgive A LOT Hosoda (Belle) needs to stop making the same movie but worse ): (Digimon: Our War Game, Summer Wars)

In Hosoda's defense, he's not as monotonous as Shinkai. At least he has done stuff like The Wolf Children or The Boy and the Beast, whereas Shikai outright refuses to do anything else but movies about "a girl and a boy".

he def tries more in some regards but it doesn't reflect well on his body of work when there's a relatively clear point of comparison

Critics seemed OK about it but people I know whose tastes I trust were very down on it.

Personal objections on your choice of examples aside, making a highly successful and critically acclaimed film that’s also total crap is one of the most “real movie” things you can do.
