Roottrees is an experience designed to convince moderately smart people they're very smart but it's barely a game, and it's just the digital version of what non-autistic people are doing so intuitively it's subconscious when they talk to other people in their neighborhood.

This was fine in "Her Story" (an earlier database exploration game) because Her Story is more like a nonlinear film (pulls more from visual novel logic) and also is much shorter so the gimmick is more appropriately attuned to the length of the game.

Again the final "puzzle" of Rootrees is so bad I assumed it was just step one of showing you were ready to approach the puzzle. Absolute dogshit game.

People talk about them as if they are in the same genre as Obra Dinn, but they aren't. Gathering information is how you access the puzzles in Obra Dinn, but the actual puzzle is intuiting based on information. Rootrees has nothing but the gathering stage.

Incident at Galley House and The Roottrees are Dead are two "puzzle" games that are not puzzle games. They are database exploration games which masquerade as puzzles to make people who aren't good at puzzles feel like they solved puzzles. They are bad games.
