Parliament: Gloryhallastoopid (Casablanca NBLP-7195, 1979) Sadly, my copy is so warped I can only play the innermost grooves. (See previous comments regarding p-funk condition.) Anybody had any luck with those flattener contraptions? Still worth having for the fabulous sleeve but kind of a bummer.

Where’d you get that funk from?

Parliament: Funkentelechy (Casablanca NBLP-7084, 1977) My favorite Parliament album and the clearest articulation of the P-Funk political message, i.e., shoot the unfunky with the bop gun and shine the flashlight on them to make them dance. It’s not subtle. It’s revolutionary.

My mom’s sister fell in love with an Englishman and we were all charmed by his accent. Everything he said sounded so dignified! Years later, during a semester in Scotland and learning all about the regional accents, I met up with him and realized he was an uneducated hick from the Isle of Wight.

Parliament: Mothership Connection (Casablanca NBLP-7022, 1975) I will buy just about any P-Funk vinyl I see regardless of condition but this one plays pretty nice despite looking gnarly. It’s preposterous how prolific and consistently amazing this crew was throughout the decade.

Interesting! My wife is super aware of all kinds of patterns, and extremely observant of details going on around her to the point where sometimes I’m pretty sure she’s a mindreader or a witch. She often predicts the future. E.g., “That boat’s going to smash into that dock.”

Super fascinating. I always joke that I don’t notice subtle color differences (pink vs salmon—who cares?) because I grew up with the 12-color box of crayons, not 64. (Which isn’t even true, I had the 64 box with the built-in sharpener.)

She’s also on multiple occasion picked a paint color at Home Depot for rooms when we didn’t have a paint chip and it matched perfectly. And one time, now that I think about it, we did the thing where they match a sample with the computer and Jolie’s ended up being a better match! Tetrachromat!

This part was particularly interesting to me. Jolie can find four-leaf clovers every time she walks by a patch of clover. Not sure if it’s the same (color perception vs shape perception?) but our son has often said he’s color-blind (never tested). I wonder if Jolie’s a tetrachromat!

Haven’t seen it yet (but it’s showing here on 70mm imax…but sold out until like 2047) but I read the critique and the most shocking revelation to me is “There are no sex scenes, and all the food looks horrible.”

Yoko Ono: It’s Alright (Polydor PD1-6364, 1982) I love and respect Yoko but this is a terrible album. Weirdly upbeat and synthy pop, it’s still abrasive but in a brand new way. Maybe the artificial sounds are supposed to reflect something about her stage of grief or whatever? It sounds goofy.

Yoko Ono: Feeling the Space (Apple SW-3412, 1973) If you only know Yoko from her screamy avant garde stuff, you might be surprised by her mid-70s yacht-adjacent rock. Groovy, laid-back music with feminist lyrics. Sneaky Pete even shows up with pedal steel on a few songs.
