A real shot, chaser moment. Shot: Approval of water guzzling data centre Chaser: The actual Danube is running so low that southern Europe is in a drought crisis

Disgraceful decision. We are living on a dying planet and the solution? Build water guzzling data centres that emit heat in a London neighbourhood. We need to end this AI obsession because AI is not going to be of any use if the planet is uninhabitable. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

I do not like going viral… even if I make a salient post 🫥 the scale of likes and reposts starts to feel like a flipping great big snowball

I mean, it’s also a little because the wider media haven’t made it a serious issue by instead banging on about how we’ve had heatwaves before in the 70s and that we just need to adapt to a Mediterranean lifestyle… that also doesn’t help.

Jessica Elgot

We are in the third drought in five years. We have the National Trust and NFU - those radical types - sounding the alarm on unprecedented temperatures. But so little from any single figure in politics talking about the climate crisis.

Sigh. Things are about to get bumpy for Burnham and the rest of us. Severe drought, potential food shortages and a recession. Amazing. www.theguardian.com/business/liv...

Watched The Long Walk last night. A bleak tale with a message about having to do the long walk through oppression - you have to keep walking and take the positive moments that present themselves. It’s good to remind yourself that even in bleak times, people find a way through.

Well, well, well, if it isn’t that “London liberals” antisemitic trope rearing its head again. From a…. *checks notes* man who lives in London on a fat wedge of a salary he wouldn’t earn anywhere outside of London, writing for a London outlet in *checks notes again incredulously* Fleet Street

David Higham

Dear me.

Your reminder that the anti-trans movement is an anti-women’s rights movement and they’re going after teenage girls now.

Nothing in here mentions a UK billionaire threatened the destruction of Amnesty International over an anti-rights report which outlined organisations connected to money from anti-rights groups. I rest my case. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I would also argue 90% of anti trans hostility online is also bots

Ren Zelen

Yup.

George Monbiot, defender of rights, blocked me for pointing out trans people are the canary that nobody listened to. Sure, I said I don’t feel much sympathy for people who didn’t help us now being shocked but it was hardly offensive. You can’t defend rights if you ignore the plight of trans people

What do we need more of in a climate crisis where we currently have drought that will be ongoing for the foreseeable future? A data centre. Right in the middle of a London neighbourhood. Which will guzzle water and destroy the climate. There’s no use for data on a dead planet. What are we doing?

THE NERVE

Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook has approved the controversial data centre on behalf of Angela Rayner, overruling Tower Hamlets Council and local opposition. Brick Lane local residents react:
