If a Lepidodendron falls in a forest and no one has evolved ears that can hear it, does it still make a sound?

Last weekend, the largest Natural History Museum in South China opened - the Shenzhen Natural History Museum! Let me take you on a brief tour 🧵
Shout-out to the kids I overheard asking really excellent questions about the Field Museum exhibits as I was touring around today. (I only jumped in to help a couple times.) Keep looking for those answers to things that don't make sense yet!
The only taxidermied blue whale in the world, 1865 CE, now housed at the Natural History Museum in Sweden. The public was allowed to enter the whale up until a couple was found having sex inside it. Now the whale’s jaws are opened only for special occasions, such as Swedish election days.

Remarkable that Trump issued this order for free. If I were in charge of PR for the Smithsonian, I would have paid him to do it. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/24/a...
People will say the big 3 didn't see it coming but US auto executives knew this was happening 15 years ago and largely acted accordingly, making huge investments in EV tech and lobbying the US govt for subsidies to those investments. Then Trump got reelected and it all got thrown out the window
Reverend Genes"Well this is awkward". The US used to to make 95% of international cars. Now about 18% and falling. ICE cars are low tech, high pollution & too expensive to buy & run. US makes 5% of EVs. China makes 75%. Oops. #Time4ChangeUSA #TheTankIsEmpty #2026MidTerms ⚖️ 🇺🇸
Visited the Air and Space and was happy to see Louis Purnell honored. Sadly no mention of his work in paleontology, where he published work on fossil invertebrates at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Unfortunately, he was forced out due to racism from his colleagues.
it does actually sound like taylor farms and the white house teamed up to try and blame taco bell for the outbreak. unprecedented corruption
Jessica NixNEW: As cyclosporiasis cases jumped, the company linked to the outbreak - Taylor Farms - effectively delayed a recall that mounted in consumer confusion. Gift link for @business www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
The District of Columbia Archives has released its largest digital collection of historic photos — showing new views of the city from 1947 through 1959. Find anything interesting? Let us know!
it's such a fun take, and the art is spectacular. i want a giant coffee table book with every single reconstruction and prints of all the scenes (but for now must settle for the pocket sized field notebooks that are all that currently exist)
Ben MillerPleased to hear that After the Age of Dinosaurs (our psychedelic take on the early Cenozoic) is free for kids through the end of the summer! Normally an $8 add-on ticket.
