For the record it's not that I was "offended". I found it unnecessarily arrogant, which is different. Given the review acknowledges several positives, it was deliberate to go in the offensive very fiercely. The critic's prerogative I guess but that doesn't mean everyone has to like that approach.

I appreciated that she pointed out the weaknesses. The positives are there too, but sandwiched and minimised by the negatives. The tone is patronising: "my teenagers liked it"; "it's making people who don't read read so thanks for that".

I found it completely offputting and rude, even if I appreciate the attention to plot detail in relation to her translation (and I assume, other translations).

no. Master's.

I have been, indeed, re-reading the Odyssey (not in the Wilson translation by the way) as "an entertaining way to hide from the high temperatures for a few hours". Go figure.

010

This in comparison to the work of the scholar who translated a classical text, who "would be ashamed to have written any part" of the screenplay (but not for aching for the kind of commercial success that only a major Hollywood adaptation could bring to a translated public domain literary classic).

To me it also exemplifies a conservative, hierarchical understanding of the arts, where literature (and above all, The Classics) will always-already be above film in the pyramid of value, with a movie being summed up as "an entertaining way to hide from the high temperatures for a few hours".

I shudder to think of how they must draft their peer review comments to be honest.

There is absolutely no doubt Wilson is exceptionally qualified to judge the differences between the film adaptation and, at least, her own translation (i.e. her own understanding of the classic text) but all the detail can be tl;dr to "it's shit, but hey, it's making people buy my book".

I have not seen the film, and I am of course 'late' to the debacle, but hey, what an arrogant way to review a film - perfect practical example of why 'the general public' dislikes scholars and the educated elite www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Aaaaargh!

Moderation processes from my two modules completed successfully with no issues and I cannot tell you how relieved I am. I think once the assessment boards approve marks I am going to need sleep for a week - or drink a whole bottle of Dom Pérignon or something. Then, obviously, sleep.
