Again. Wilson's "takedown" was based on the tired premise that if she didn't enjoy the experience of the work, that the reason must involve a moral failure on the part of that work. Weird that Oates is weighing in, but maybe she saw people who knew better championing Wilson's article.

There are still many professors out there who teach "book good, film bad" adaptation courses, and/or that measure the quality of an adaptation by its fidelity to the source material (with moral undercurrents, to boot). It's such an anti-intellectual approach to cinema, and yet here we are.

It's 2026 and we're still doing: "I didn't like the filmgoing experience, and therefore the film objectively is an ethical failure." Public intellectuals--especially those in arts and humanities--should be challenging these types of arguments, not repeating them.

My take is that Neil deGrasse Tyson's take downs of sci-fi films is faux-intellectualism--one premised on the lazy idea that cinematic representation has a moral obligation to abide by certain "facts"--and should not become the model for other academics to weigh in on popular movies.

You can also see how this structure borrows from LORD OF THE RINGS, echoing the fellowship/city/villain structure of those books.

It has a really nice symmetrical 3x3x3 structure, though the book volumes don't reinforce this structure. And I think it explains the disappointing "endings" to the Flagg and Crimson King subplots, as the real antagonist is Roland's psyche, which is why that climax is so satisfying, if not perfect.

So, basically, the 7 DARK TOWER books are structured as follows: Books 1, 2, & part 1 of 3 building the fellowship: Eddie, Susannah, & Jake Books 3 (part 3), 4, & 5 saving the cities: Lud, Hambry, & Calla Books 6 & 7 defeating the core villains: Flagg, Crimson King, and Roland's tower addiction
