It has a really nice symmetrical 3x3x3 structure, though the book volumes don't reinforce this structure. And I think it explains the disappointing "endings" to the Flagg and Crimson King subplots, as the real antagonist is Roland's psyche, which is why that climax is so satisfying, if not perfect.
