Heading back to NorCal after a glorious month at my place on Vancouver Island — pretty close to heaven on earth. It’s a looong two-day drive, but we always overnight in Eugene, OR so we can indulge in the *best* Korean food at Tiger Mama. Takes the sting out of leaving Canada. 🟥 ♥️ 🟥

One of many great films shot in Santa Cruz! 🎢 🌊

16mm Inferno

🎬 39 years ago today, the cult Vampire Horror film "The Lost Boys" premiered in US theatres (July 31, 1987). Directed by Joel Schumacher and an amazing cast starring Jason Patric, the late Corey Haim, Dianne Wiest, Kiefer Sutherland, Barnard Hughes, Edward Herrmann, Jami Gertz and Corey Feldman!

I’m surprised it’s only dropped by 25%, TBH. Nobody I know up here is traveling to the States. I travel back and forth pretty regularly — and pretty much see only Yanks making the trip. But $2.3 billion in lost revenue is really gonna hurt small towns and small businesses. So dumb.

Who can blame them? Canadian visits dropped by 25% last year, costing the US $2.3 billion in tourism revenue. Are we great yet? www.washingtonpost.com/world/2026/0...

Just saw page proofs for my short piece on Cleo Madison’s ELEANOR’S CATCH, coming soon in the SILENT FILM COMPANION edited by @lizclarke100.bsky.social and @martinlj.bsky.social. Did I compare Madison and DWG? Find out early next year!

Film folks, @librarycongress is now accepting nominations for the National Film Registry, honoring "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant films.” Take a look at the work already recognized and you’ll see how presentist, white and male the list currently skews. 🗳️

Great thread from @histoftech.bsky.social on, welp, history of tech, as always. ⬇️

For many years, people didn’t randomly film others in public—not because we didn’t have the technology, but because the social contract said you didn’t do that. That’s why Meta is going full court press on their PR and celebrity endorsements. They remember how people ran google glass outta town.

Would be very curious to hear from fellow film historians who have knowledge of this practice. What are its origins and/or regional parameters? I’ve never heard of anything like this before.

My youngest is on her way to Indy for a 12pm movie showing of Hadestown. They’d have preferred a later screening, but apparently at that theatre nobody under 21 can see a movie after 7pm without supervision. That doesn’t seem right. And I can’t shake the feeling that there’s a racist element too.

I love every single one of the “Advantages of Being a Woman Artist” — but I think my favorite ( for obvious reasons) is “Being included in revised versions of art history.” Long live the Guerrilla Girls!! faroutmagazine.co.uk/founding-mem...

Forever grateful to Mr. Jewison. He funded a scholarship for U of Toronto Cinema Studies graduates going on to grad school. I was the first recipient. That was ages ago. It continues to this day. ☺️

No, N*tflix, I didn’t “forget” to keep watching that stupid show. I stopped watching it. On purpose. Because it was bad. Leave me alone.
