I saw it as a film about how many ways the world has to show one man he's not the hero he thinks he is before he finally gets it, and what damage that does to the whole society in the meantime.

But using the Odyssey, Nolan effectively asks the question "what if we were so convinced of our own cleverness that only in retrospect did we realize what damage we were doing?"

Not a question we can clearly parse from the perspective of Ancient Greeks because we're too far removed and the 'Ancient Greeks" Homer (if he even existed) was writing about were not one single society or even point in time.

What are the classics for? Well, one thing they're for is providing an opportunity to look at This Modern World with enough of a plausible distance to try to really see ourselves. Nolan asks "what if, in your hubris, you undermine the very values that made your society what it is?"

Nolan's hardly an underdog, but I really do think we need to get away from the idea that fidelity to source material is an index of quality. There are absolutely problems with the film, but it's an entertainment designed to warn audiences that complex civilization is coming unglued. It succeeds.
