I’ve been reading up (OK audiobooks) on Chevron Deference and it’s fascinating stuff. It drives home to me that you really can’t presume expertise in fields far outside your own work. I previously thought Chevron Deference was just common sensical but now I’m pretty torn and I get the difficulties.

Maybe she’s a classicist because she cares about Homer and not just to make money? I’m actually of the school of thought that movies don’t have to be historically accurate. It’s its own art form with its own goals. But you can’t scold scholars for caring about scholarship. Thats what we do.

Good for Fauci. If there was any chance they cared about anything at all besides getting something post-pardon on the record that they could construe in a way to persecute him it might have been worth answering questions but that’s obviously not what this is about.

Econlib is featuring a lot of material on Claudia Goldin and the gender pay gap today, and I find it hilarious that the entire section titled "Is It Discrimination?" does not contain the word "discrimination." The gymnastics around Goldin's work and gender discrimination is always amazing to me.

So many of my projects have emerged from rando archive threads from prior projects. It’s really great to get in that rhythm of building out your understanding of something and it’s great to have a big enough stock of evidence that you can randomly draw from it.

If he’s got in mind something like “if we have the capacity to save X lives but don’t volunteer to do it we aren’t by definition responsible” then fine, but if you were delivering food and medicine AND STOPPED of course that’s on you.

Awful news, I hadn’t known he was sick. Blecker was my history of economics professor and my heterodox macro professor at AU. He was the one that recommended me for teaching the undergrad history of economics course. A great guy and very supportive.

Academic "viewpoint diversity" (more conservatives and libertarians) would be great, what honestly bugs me is the quota mentality which is obviously hugely ironic given all the handwringing about quotas on the right. There was a time not long ago when universities were bastions of conservatism.

Yep. What's ironic is Tyler, McArdle, etc. insist that we be realistic and down to earth about public perceptions of the university and that's totally fine with me. But one of the realities of the situation is that there's fabricated political scaremongering (hardly a first time for it too!).
