Still remember friends saying that if it weren't for the internet, their anime fandom needs would be harder. Not a lot of stores that carried anime or were solely for anime outside of San Juan!!! For reasons!!!!!

And I explicitly mention San Juan because the now anime discourse (yeesh) had a few good notes in differences of geography. San Juan is San Juan, the capital, and someone in Caguas or Ponce would have to drive 3-4 hours back in the day if they wanted to go to Plaza.

Saw a few mentions of Suncoast and I totally forgot that the only way San Juan (where I'm from) had a Suncoast was by placing it next to Sears (who was one of two BIG BOI store entrances) inside the biggest shopping mall of the Caribbean, Plaza Las Américas. My second home, practically lol.

Not every old head was anti-anime during the 90s and the 2000s; plenty of folks saw the appeal if you knew where to look. For example, the Pinky & the Brain comics did parody stories of both Robotech and Ranma 1/2. The writer, Jesse Leon McCann, was 32 at the time.

In short: THIS SHIT IS COMPLICATED. Trying to litiigate it on a microblogging site is not going to be productive, because we have millions of stories and millions of perspectives, all of which are correct, but also overtly clashing with one another.

Moreover, it's impossible to understate how instrumental Black fans were in the boom, as works like DBZ and Akira took hold, and even started to influence hip-hop culture to the point that RZA and Frank Ocean openly cite them as influences.
