Saw a few mentions of Suncoast and I totally forgot that the only way San Juan (where I'm from) had a Suncoast was by placing it next to Sears (who was one of two BIG BOI store entrances) inside the biggest shopping mall of the Caribbean, Plaza Las Américas. My second home, practically lol.

There's already A Guy arguing that this was false because of DBZ and Pokemon and I want him to take a time machine back to 90s Puerto Rico so he can gaslight us further. Even with Pokemon and Toonami changing views, a lot of people still saw anime as "those Chinese cartoons" (derogatory) or--

Can not be overstated how Akira was a watershed moment. Here's Siskel and Ebert showcasing Akira as their "Video Pick of the Week" on At The Movies in 1992. Wild clip to show from the movie on network television. (Timestamp 24:55) youtu.be/8VnL4I19hQM?...

That's not to say there weren't spurts of popularity. Streamline Pictures getting films in the arthouse circuit built an audience with film buffs, Akira hit with the force of a bomb. GitS was famously a Billboard #1 top seller in the USA. And so on.

Not every old head was anti-anime during the 90s and the 2000s; plenty of folks saw the appeal if you knew where to look. For example, the Pinky & the Brain comics did parody stories of both Robotech and Ranma 1/2. The writer, Jesse Leon McCann, was 32 at the time.
