One of the deep ironies about claims that we should support Israel as the region's only democracy is that both Israel and the U.S. have been instrumental in propping up despotic regimes, and helping to crush democratic movements, in Jordan and elsewhere in the Middle East.
#StupidSuezOne of the A/B tested headlines for this piece is "Some Jordanians Dare To Speak Out Against U.S Troops Presence.". The vast majority of Jordanians are against the presence of American troops. If the kingdom was an actual democracy, the US would lose the ability to base in this country tomorrow.

i was thinking earlier today about why transphobia is so deranging. I missed that it is also much more *mediated by the online environment* than other forms of bigotry. because trans people are such a tiny portion of the population, anti-trans people really only encounter them as twitter combatants.
Shay O’ReillyI think it has something to do with the highly paranoiac nature of transphobia! Because they are anxious that they cannot in fact “always tell,” there is a possibility of more trans presence than they can perceive - and because everyone’s gender performance is implicated, it is uniquely deranging.

My heart goes out to everyone who tried to take the Washington bar exam. You spend years in law school, months preparing, thousands of dollars on courses, and countless hours putting your life on hold for a single exam. No matter how this ultimately gets resolved, these examinees deserved better.

My core group of friends and I have started a last Friday of the month happy hour. The only thing that changes is location so it's more convenient for a variety of people. We have a standing invite list of all of our friends who we don't get to see enough or would like to introduce to each other.
Naomi AldermanI'm feeling like maybe I should write something on: how to start a community. You start with you and one friend trying to live near enough to each other that you can walk to each other's houses. You host a regular meal for other friends who live nearby, at home or somewhere local and cheap.
