And @ecoclimatelab.bsky.social thank you for the pointer btw 😊, but the latest study from Kaighin seems to suggest VPD estimates indeed lead to an overestimation (agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...) so how to reconcile this with the last ~3 years?

Large Overestimation of Projected Western U.S. Wildfire Burned Forest Area With WarmingWildfires in western U.S. forests burn hotter and spread farther when fuel is drier Studies using vapor pressure deficit as a proxy for land dryness claim that burned area will increase dramatica...agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com

This is the only study I found suggesting a lowering of the bar for ignition which would explain much larger areas in just a few years (tho that’s for the western US) but happy to be pointed to more :) agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

Wildfire Ignition‐Day Vapor Pressure Deficit Trend and Its Weakening Atmospheric Circulation Control Over the Western United StatesWildfires in the Western US are expanding into regions with historically lower vapor pressure deficit (VPD) Despite overall climatic drying, the specific VPD on fire ignition days has not signifi...agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com
