i know we have predicted about 10 of the last 2 realignments but vote preferences *can* change and there is no guarantee that the electorate will necessarily be a polarized deadlock, in fact sustained hypercompetitive elections is actually fairly atypical of american politics

Also true, although given that in a post-Watergate world political parties don't really exist as actual organizations—they're just a name to unite under—I suspect there will still be a thing called the "Republican Party" but it will be quite different from the current version.

I can even construct a plausible argument as to how it happens. How does the GOP even move on after Trump? It's a cult of personality. No one else will be able to fill his shoes, but their current base won't let them pivot to being something else.
