Jeopardizing the good order and security of institutions for Reason Magazine. I report on prisons, policing, and civil liberties. Based in the fabulous Florida Keys. Email: cj@reason.com, cj.ciaramella@protonmail.com. Signal: cjciaramella.68

I saw a pdf of the print layout for a 14,000-word magazine story I wrote, and I'm excited, mortified, going to throw up.

it's too bad Florida officials are too stupid to realize that crashing out over an Ottessa Moshfegh story is the highest compliment you can pay Ottessa Moshfegh.

A college professors is fired for teaching an Ottessa Moshfegh story that causes "mild discomfort" for one student. Implication is that DeSantis government was involved in the firing. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/29/u...

My film adaptation of The Odyssey would end with someone saying, "Hey, you know what we should call a really long journey?" Freeze frame, hard cut to credits.

The Tate brothers are being held in FDC Miami. Regardless of how you feel about them, the conditions there are widely reported to be awful. Part of the building is being used to hold ICE detainees, and I've heard and read complaints of constant lockdowns, overcrowding, and unsanitary conditions.

Probably the sex crimes. That's my guess

The ACLU of Southern California found immigration agents on body cam and text chains using terms like "wet" and "tonk" to refer to Latinos: www.aclusocal.org/app/uploads/... huge congrats to Robert Kavanaugh, whose reputation is looking better all the time

The Trojans also broke a ceasefire that would have ended the war, although to be fair, that was due to meddling by the gods. (The gods are the real assholes in the stories, a fact which you lose in the film adaptations.)

Lindsay Beyerstein

The Trojan War was collective defense by the Greeks. All the Greek lords agreed that they'd fight to get Helen back if anyone kidnapped her.

I assume the Harris County DA's office will reject this request due to an ongoing investigation, but I'm interested to see if officers at the scene used portable drug test kits that are known for being unreliable

Greg Sargent

Big news here. After Salgado Araujo was killed by an ICE agent, *someone* leaked that a search warrant for the van showed FBI thought they might have seen drug baggies in it. The family said it was drink powder. Apparently the substance was tested and the family was correct.

The premise of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof is that Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor are sweaty and not sleeping together, and it's totally unbearable for everyone around them, including the audience.

there is a recurring prompt around what’s the best that anyone has ever looked on camera and I never have an answer but I’m watching right now and I think it’s gotta be George Clooney in Ocean’s 11

I like it when he bullshits about something where I specifically know ball. (These are all screenshots from different articles I wrote back during the Obama administration.)

Q: Do you think it's appropriate to subpoena family members of journalists to find out information? TRUMP: I don't know. Barack Hussein Obama did it all the time. He went after journalists and nobody said anything about it.

This week I published a story with a widow talking about how her husband of nearly 30 years died in ICE detention. His autopsy report found that he died of COVID. I posted this story a few times, but if I do one useful thing with my reporting, it's documenting these cases reason.com/2026/07/20/a...

Latest: Florida's wildlife agency used a police database to snoop on activists and critics. The agency vaguely invoked threats against commissioners, but wouldn't tell me if anyone targeted was the subject of a threat investigation, or provide examples of threats reason.com/2026/07/24/f...

This is good news because I can still pitch my BurgerTime script to A24.

There's a reason why there's really strong cultural taboos against perfidy! When conservatives wish for an "accurate," heroic Odysseus, they're just explaining that they don't understand the story at all.

more serious Odyssey opinion: leaning into the religious significance of the Trojan horse strategy (and the hospitality as central to civilization theme) was a good choice by Nolan and friends artistically and politically. strongest condemnation of our present era I'd expect from a mass market film

Very funny that OpenAI's Amelia Bedelia model tried to cheat a test by escaping its sandbox and launching a cyberattack against another AI company.
