Big part of the story here is that Dems have become so attached to the NatSec Mom candidate recruitment model and CD5 was a natural fit for that. When the party has to find candidates who can compete across a big, diverse district like CD3 it seems totally lost and defaults to rich Aspen guys.

If Dems fall short in CD3 by a point or two it could be one of the party's biggest own goals this cycle. There's a persuasive-enough argument that the demographic/partisan shifts in CD5 make it modestly more likely to flip, but the mismatch in money/attention has been massive for two R+5 seats.

During the gubernatorial primary Bennet was constantly talking about buying a house in Denver for nothing in the late 80s while Weiser constantly invoked Roy Romer and Federico Peña as a model for pulling Colorado out of an economic downturn. The dirt-cheap housing was because of the downturn!

Obviously lower migration isn't the only reason housing costs came down in the last few years — a big apartment construction wave (which predated Polis' statehouse housing push) also helped. But it's pretty strange to avoid acknowledging that growth and housing costs interact with each other.

As best as I can tell, it's been 18 months since Polis has bragged about the Denver metro's housing cost cooldown — a period during which business groups have made major inroads in policy and media circles in portraying the state's overall growth slowdown as a big problem.
