"That one tastes to me like Calvita," an eccentrically candid Wexford man said tonight about the Saint-Nectaire. "I think Port Salut is more like Calvita, Aidan. This one reminds me of Three Counties."

that is in fact literally in the bible. it's Matthew 6:5.
Right Wing WatchRep. Lauren Boebert insists that public Christian worship events are necessary for America to experience revival: "I don't think that Jesus ever called for any Christian to pray only silently or to keep their faith hidden only in the prayer closet."

*whispers* you know we can do this cultural debate about art thing all the time, right? Websites and news organizations used to have culture critics on staff whose entire job was writing about books, movies, and TV. People read them and then discussed them. We have the technology to do this again.

“Let’s reduce the number of guns?” “No way. That’s crazy. But let’s put chemical weapons on drones instead”

This includes people who came here legally on a visa, applied for another form of status, and are just waiting for the US government to decide their case. People who haven’t done a single thing wrong.
Hamed AleazizNEW: The Trump administration has begun arresting foreign citizens with expired visas as they travel through airports, according to documents obtained by The Times and interviews with lawyers — a tactic that opens up a vast new pool of people for deportation. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/28/u...

“The proposition that trans people constitute the urgent danger of our times is not a brave minority view fighting for a hearing. It is the settled opinion of the richest man on the planet... the policy of the President of the United States… the campaign material of every hard-right party in Europe”

If the Jones Act was never adopted, urbanization would not have been limited to deep water seaports. River ports would have grown at similar rate after 1920. St. Louis would be one of the biggest cities in the world. West Virginia would have remained a major manufacturing hub.

Quite possibly the most needlessly self-destructive law the US adopted in the 20th Century.
Katherine Alejandra CrossFinally, there's the question of the Jones Act. Section 27 of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920. If you're Alaskan or Hawaiian, you're also probably familiar with the fuckery it's caused. For Puerto Rico, the stakes are even higher.

Stephen Miller said just the other day that all asylum claims are "fake." A couple deported from the U.S. to Guatemala were gagged, bound, and shot dead. Their 14-month old found crying next to their mother's body. People like Miller don't care though because this is the point: ethnic cleansing.

My understanding of a JR: we have a constitutional right to due process. If we believe that process was not followed or circumvented, we can request a judicial review of that process. A JR is not granted on a whim. Some reasonable argument must be made. Happy to be corrected!!

Not only is a JR not granted on a whim, it won’t even be heard if there isn’t an arguable ground to bring it. There’s a built in process to screen out frivolous cases before the public body whose decision is being challenged ever hears about it.
