“This renewed incarnation of ACT UP [Chicago] focuses on three advocacy and protest tentpoles: attacks on HIV/AIDS funding, the domestic trans genocide and the ongoing and unmitigated COVID pandemic.” We do so love to see it 🫡

This is a well-produced segment. I encourage you to watch so you can hear the noise for yourself. The professor of environmental health science that they interviewed called it an “unprecedented new noise source.”

People who are suddenly deported to countries they haven’t been to for years — or, in some cases, have NEVER been to — are incredibly vulnerable. We are going to be reading stories like this for years. God have mercy on their three little girls.

“If immigration hadn't picked up my brother, my sister-in-law would still be alive, and the children wouldn't be going through this sorrow,” he said. “Unfortunately, immigration — the [U.S.] government — doesn't see that. It makes no difference to them.” www.stlpr.org/law-order/20...

Really interesting piece by @nuala.bsky.social about the battle for a lot in Oakland. It's a perfect spot for housing, and the planned building seems actually good and will be truly (!!) affordable (!!). It's also going to destroy the homes of a bunch of herons. www.coyotemedia.org/herons-or-ho...

this is why thinking with community radio is so important!! 20yo students who believe the internet is a disempowering surveillant corporate hellscape still *totally get community radio as a vehicle for thinking about community control of outlets for speaking and listening*

J. Nathan Matias

I hope I'm wrong, but I imagine the cohort of people who care about a better internet is growing older as younger people are not in a position to imagine alternative worlds and since working on this isn't going to get them ahead.

well, I never expected to be published in a Stanford journal, but the McKnight Foundation asked me write my thesis to the philanthropic world after the MN ICE surge: when there is an emergency, just... give money to people on the ground doing the actual work. as fast as possible. radical, I know.
