Check out the steaming pile of AI garbage that just won $1,000 first prize in the Ohio State Fair poster contest. It's especially tragic since the 5th place, drawn by an actual human, is great. Rooster (OH fair has biggest poultry show in US) riding the "butter cow" (exactly what it sounds like).

if you want to see normally sclerotic do-nothing local governments suddenly snap into action, do some quietly beneficial tactical urbanism type thing like this and watch how quickly they race to remove it
wishdaThe DSA in Wilmingotn, N.C. has created a "crisis" by putting benches at city bus stops, after literal decades of the city promising and failing to do so.

Bullying works! And so does good journalism. Keep it up.
Joseph CoxThat was fast. Google sent me a statement saying it is now “rolling back“ this AI feature after our demonstration and others from OSINT researchers www.404media.co/google-earth...

It’s a crowded genre, but this is one of the worst/dumbest “what product can we recklessly cram genAI into to justify its existence to investors as we hemorrhage money” I’ve seen in a minute. Good thing we have no functioning regulatory body in place to reign in our wildly irresponsible tech giants!
Joseph CoxNew from 404 Media: Google Earth has introduced an AI feature that lets anyone fabricate completely bullshit satellite images. In our own tests, we added a “bomb blast and crater” to an area of Los Angeles. This is a misinformation time bomb, will 100% be abused www.404media.co/google-earth...

Well, it’s invoicing day, and since they’re really apparently not going to pay me for something I wrote for them two months ago, I guess today is the day to post about how @vulture.com fucks over its film freelancers. Long (sorry) thread, with receipts:
VultureThere are 118 feature films, plus galas, talks, podcast recordings, and more at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Our guide to the movies and events worth lining up for.

Two more reasons the 1950s were fun: bike motors and loud toy grenades. That Whizzer is super cool , but it’s a hundred bucks and I’m very sure you could buy an actual used motorcycle for less than that because my dad had an Indian in high school. Those hand grenades sell themselves 💣 #VintageAds

After my parents were visiting set for the first time, I asked my dad what he thought. He said “I didnt realize, it’s like you’re building a house, and once an hour good looking people run in and put on a play for five minutes. Then they leave and you go back to construction.”
Alvaro M. BedoyaPeople think "Hollywood" is rich and famous. The reality? Film and TV is a national industry. It's a blue collar industry. And it is an industry free fall. My latest for @newrepublic.com on how the Paramount merger would crush blue collar workers who can not afford it newrepublic.com/article/2136...
