When the question "which is the closest star" came up during a competition in seventh grade, I answered Proxima Centauri, and was counted wrong even though that was the correct answer (they were expecting Alpha Centauri). We lost and my teammates hated me.

In a 6th grade competition, my team was asked to identify the fulcrum on a can opener. We had only ever used a wheel-style can opener, not a church key style can opener. We correctly identified the fulcrum on the wheel, but were penalized because they expected a church key (but didn’t specify).

That was the only question we missed, and it cost us the title.

Way back when I had a job scoring the essay portion of a state-wide standardized test that was given at various grade levels. I remember one project where second graders were asked to complete a story given a starting line about opening a door and finding stairs.

Turns out, a lot of Texas only has one-story buildings, and people use the word "steps" for the occasional entrance that isn't ground level. Add that to having a lot of ESL families, and good proportion of kids thought the word was "stars".

There were also papers where the kids responded that they didn't know what "stairs" meant, and then just put their pencil down.

I will say that was a pretty good prompt for a narrative, even if it did throw a curveball to the education agency. Teams of psychologists and educators and field testers would screen and modify potential prompts to make them fair to all students...
