Schools are where kids literally learn how to be HUMAN - learning about themselves and how to relate to others, MORE than a place to learn academic skills. Robots are completely inappropriate for this use. FFS!!!!!

But I am having a few thoughts. Perhaps at some point AI will be a trustworthy tutor for children. I have doubts, but..

I accept there is a possibility. Educator is a very specific skill set. Let's test this extensively before introduction. Has it been tested? Apparently, to some extent. Turns out the kids did not interact with it on more than about 40%-50%. This may be why the replica human is being used, IDK?

But that attitude would be racist toward an AI entity. When and how do we decide when AI is a sentient entity? We have not undertaken a serious democratic discussion of where we want AI to go,or not go. Do we want to create AI life? And the tech titans are the last ones we want making the decisions.

I am not sure that we should allow lifelike AI robots. The one pictured in the article is absurd looking, but I guess it had a certain MAGA woman look. But my intuition says we should think long and hard on this also. The lawsuits against social media and adverse effects on kids are mounting....

Maybe we should take heed and slow down AI infiltration into society. I hope we are not too late. Because there will be downsides and we have not prepared to avoid or respond.

“For Now” AI and Humanoids are shitty - for now. Which means the pushback about how they are shitty is entirely warranted - for now. But if the experts are correct - even if they don’t reach AGI across all domains - they will be remarkably good in x years (doesn’t matter if it’s 5 or 15)

You don’t want advanced AI that knows each kid better than their own parents - from their mental and physical health, special needs, ideal ways of learning each subject, limitless patience, ability to know how they’re feeling, never tired/stressed/ill/confused/angry, all languages, best methods etc?

Is the advanced AI and realistic robot in the room with us now? No. So we shouldn't be testing this crap on kids. Least of all poor indigenous kids. Even in the future there are massive safeguarding, data and privacy implications.

First off - absolutely concerns now and in the future. But that doesn’t mean what I’m describing isn’t going to materialize. The ingredients appear to be there. Afa testing - it’s obv not apples and apples but the first decades of commercial flying, nuclear energy, etc was quite a learning curve.

I think we basically agree. It, might happen - although I think the capability, resource and infrastructure barriers are enormous. I'm not convinced that any educational AI interaction for kids should be via 'realistic' robots though.

It's ridiculous. Students will have less respect for an object than they do real teachers. The only thing it will teach is divisiveness. As a teacher, I often need to pivot my approach to reach kids all over the spectrum, that can't be programmed, it takes years of knowing them as individuals.
