I think he was always Fawlty, he just affected a veneer of affability when he was younger, and lived in a time when men being despicable was socially accepted. He was awful to a whole string of women.

When I did work experience in the 90s, employers loved to have a free dogsbody to do some filing and make the tea. It wasn't necessarily useful work experience but I did learn some realities of the workplace. Perhaps with strict regulations today, employers find it more trouble than it's worth?
