This would be completely unacceptable in a First Past the Post system. The only way it can be acceptable is in a Proportional Representation system and with a None of the above option.

What is it with people who believe that people who would only vote when compelled by a fine would make a good decision? A non-voter is a person saying "I don't know or care enough to make a decision". No one *really* wants those people to vote.

I pass on whether or not compulsory voting is a good idea, but it seems to me that introducing it would be a good way to lose the next election, because many of those who have in the past chosen not to vote would vote against the party that forced them to do so.

Why only a £10 fine? You can be fined £100 for submitting a tax return a day too late. £10 is less than the cost of two pints of beer; very few people will be persuaded to vote by the prospect of a £10 fine. And just think of the cost of enforcing it!

Definitely think people might be a bit more engaged earlier in life for longer if they're made to feel like their opinions need to be heard.

Wife is from Oz. Listening to family discussions/banter over 30 years I'd say fact nearly everyone votes is cos it's an 'Australian thing' (they are very proud of anything that is). Law/risk of A$20 fine is origin but neither really here or there nowadays. Will be hard in UK to (quickly) build that.

You know what would be lit? If everyone chooses a party when they register and if you don't show up, your vote is automatically cast for that party.

Can't access the article but will it also include us Brits who live overseas? I can't vote but would be happy to do so. However, the system needs to be set up so that it's possible to do this. Postal vallots don't work as they don't arrive on time. Getting the embassies involved would help.
