The Simpsons is a show that started in the 1980s based on the creators own childhood in the 1950s that continues into the 2020s; fortunately future cultural historians will be able to refer to it simply as taking place in the 'late Washington dynasty'

On This Day in Simpsons History

Lisa Simpson’s wedding, which took place 15 years in the future at the time it aired, now takes place 16 years in the past. #TheSimpsons

I am so depressed that future historians will probably refer to a large part of my life as "The Trumpian era"

this is actually something I try to keep in mind all the time when doing Chinese history; it's very normal to quote a source from, say, 1520 when referring to something in 1550, but that was a generation and a half apart!

Assyriologists will casually refer to a Neo-Assyrian source to elucidate something in the Old Babylonian period, over a thousand years earlier

When was the Odyssey written down again? Seems to me the same with Roman history where we mostly have sources from people who read about something instead of being there.

I was thinking about this sort of thing the other day. If you figure I will live to 100 (give or take, for easy maths) there's only ten of my lifetimes back to the Norman conquest and twenty back to Jesus.

If you say recorded history started around 2000BC, I will live for about 2.5% (1/40th) of all of recorded history.

People usually date recorded history to somewhere between 4000BC & 6000BC.

But honestly 2000BCE isn't that far off either.

It depends on what level of complexity needs to present in the tabulation system before you consider it writing.

Yes and slso how accessible to how many people, & how long people continue to be able to interpret it across how large an area or polity. Although given how much of the past just disappears, writing could remain accessible for several generations & it would look like a short time to us today. 1/

Thinking about how many thousands of years pharoanic Egypt lasted is a bit mind-boggling, for example. 2/2

Those are the oldest writing that has been preserved. Paper, goat skins and unfired clay don’t exactly preserve very well over such long timeframes.

If anything there seems to be evidence that Göbekli Tepe, the earliest known agricultural city (12,500 years old), had some type of proto-writing.

Shush you’re impinging on the talk I’m going to give at my son’s bar mitzvah later this year

It's also worth mentioning that he probably doesn't remember all that much about the 50s, since he was born in `54. He was a 14 year old in the Summer of Love!

Time is flat.

In college, I was a TA for David Du Bois (stepson of W.E.B.). In the mid-1990s, I worked for Harry Belafonte who was politicized as a young man by Paul Robeson and W.E.B Du Bois. It never ceases to blow my mind that I have two connections to someone born in 1868.

Wait you worked for Belafonte? What a cool thing
