People in the replies seem confused so: slop is a genre invented by humans. Mr Beast videos, for example: hyper-optimized for the algorithm, soulless, plastic. Pre-AI. AI slop is merely a mass-produced reflection of the worst parts of human nature, at scale. It's really bad! But we did it first.

It kind of is but also it's a game called weed shop 4 so I don't know if the player base has that much of a leg to stand on re principled opposition to slop

my take on this is exactly opposite: youtube videos designed to ride algorithms and news articles meant to hit SEO niches are also meaningfully AI generated, and our culture has been mediated by automated systems for decades but these takes dovetail, as both focus on the continuity within change

All mass media has been using some sort of user feedback algorithms since the ability for people to write letters to the newspaper. You kind of have to be against any data informed content or pick an arbitrary line in the sand with the take that SEO is AI.

indeed, SEO is not AI! but Google's search algorithms are AI, and so are the YouTube algorithms, and "humans made this content in order to Please The Algorithm, and their creative choices were shaped by The Algorithm" is not so very far away from "this entire website was written by ChatGPT"
