The experience of going to an anime con for the first time ever. I can't really articulate the feelings, but it was a special kind of excited newness that you really only get to fully experience once for something, but you can still kind of reach back and remember the feelings as they were then

Getting to meet Mari Shimizu the original Japanese voice of Astro Boy at Comic-Con last year & also watching a good number of top voice actors in the US honor her including witnessing a very touching meeting between her & Candi Milo who was Astro Boy in the 2003 series.

College anime club, we’d hang out on Thursday night, and make dinner with each other, different people would bring dvds and we’d try all sorts… Kodocha, Vexille, Mushishi, Black Lagoon. After that era I’d invite folks to my house for pizza and anime. I’ve slowed down to 1 or 2 guests a year.

Seeing Char's Counter Attack in a theater with the polycule was amazing. And decades before that, seeing the first 4 episodes of Read Or Die: The TV with a few dozen strangers in a lecture hall at a scifi con hosted by a local college. It was brand new at the time.

Waiting for the final 8th Escaflowne DVD to come in the mail after volume 7 ended on a huge cliffhanger.

I'll always remember when Cartoon Network premiered Pokémon here in Latin America. For some strange reason they decided to start airing Episode 2 and they skipped everything that teach you about what pokémon are but was a magical experience, the next day all the kids were talking about it on school.

Super small thing: AOL had an “official” chatroom for anime that I started visiting in my early teens just as I was getting into anime. Folks in there were so welcoming and shaped a ton of my tastes in games, music, and shows. Nearly 30 years later and I still think about it.

Seeing Castle of Cagliostro for the first time at the Japanese-Canadian Cultural Centre and hearing the crowd explode when that little yellow Fiat charged up the side of the mountain.

I’ve mentioned this before (and tagged her), but strolling past the dealers and towards the concessions at Otakon in my crossplay when I hear someone yell out “holy shit, Rumbling Hearts!” and it’s translator @le-kaitsu.bsky.social having recognized my obscure cosplay.

It's probably minor in the grand scheme of things and my life, but getting a really bad dubbed (as in copied) VHS tape of the first Sailor Moon movie in the mail from another person in the community, and hearing their original voices for the first time. And Moonlight Densetsu.

Got quite a few, but the one that comes to mind the most was seeing the world premiere of Your Name at AX 2016. I went in with no major expectations and was just as blown away as everyone else there. The crowd even gave Shinkai an unprompted standing ovation when he went on stage after.

I still love getting to see the Sailor Moon R movie on the big screen which I never thought I would get to do.

Meeting Nobuo Uematsu at Anime Central

Back in the day, the most ambitious thing my college anime club ever did was organize a road trip to Austin to catch a showing of the Cowboy Bebop movie. Well worth the drive.

During my first week at college, my roommate told me that some people were watching anime in the dorm common room, so I went to meet some fellow anime fans. I am now married to one of them.

Manga artist Michio Murakawa revealing to me that he gave my name to a character in his Yamato 2199 manga. That was a pretty big one. Also, hearing 2nd hand that Yoshinobu Nishizaki once said my Yamato website was "beautiful."

Seeing my very first Scopedog model kit (which I still have) in a US hobby shop. I knew nothing about Armored Trooper Votoms. All I knew is that Scopedog was reaching into my heart and I had to know everything about it. And now... timeldred.com/votomshub/
