NEW | California just reached a world-first solar milestone Over HALF (51%) of electricity generation across the whole month of May came from solar power. Battery storage is the big difference maker, enabling California to push the share of solar generation to this level.

And yet my utility bill is consistently higher even though I've cut my usage. We need usage caps.

Battery Atorage means being able to use solar at 3am at night (as long as there's still enough left in the tanks)

And we've had days where the entire grid is powered through renewables. When home batteries become more efficient and cost-effective, and laws/permitting are in place to support them, the game will forever change.

Batteries store electricity, but do not make any. You cannot add net power to the grid with batteries. you can shift when it is consumed. Also, batteries consume a net delta of energy during charge/discharge cycle.

You can add significantly more solar to a grid when pairing it with batteries. From a certain share upwards, the key is to not add further solar to the solar peak in the middle of the day, but to the shoulder hours and the night. Batteries enable that shift.

Yes, it is an offset, a shift. But make sure to make it clear to people that batteries do not increase power of that renewable on the grid. To add more renewable power to a state or grid segment, you need more collectors (whether solar pv, wind, hydro, etc.)

Now talk about the data centers, and how Newsom won't make them disclose their water use.

Battery? some way of storing solar energy to use without a visible sun? that's ridiculous, it would take millions of years to convert the energy of the sun into plants, feed them to giant animals, bury them under tons of pressure, and wait for them to be ready to be sucked from a big straw in Texas.

@governor.ca.gov make it illegal for ant for profit corporations to manage our energy. That would be something that could really help.

Hungary came close in June 2025 at 47%, but California is the first power system of significant size to cross 50% for a month. ...and California's system is ~5x larger than Hungary's. In May 2012, California crossed 1% solar share for the first time.

This graph is OBVIOUSLY fake. In addition to the trendline being far too regular/predictable, CA’s solar in 2012 was not zero. Its first utility-scale solar plant was built in Hesperia in… 1982.

And still, our idiot president thinks that Mabel will not be able to watch Hee Haw because the sun is not shining. ☀️

PLEASE PLEASE enable "Balcony" plug-in solar panels for residences. It's really unbelievable that we still don't have these. Utility company lobbying? Why else? Why does Europe innovate before we do? This is a no-brainer. We make a good living, but still can't afford 20k plus for a rooftop system.

Good. I was just reading the other day about China's new breakthroughs in sodium battery chemistries and large scale storage. It's a huge win. This is how fission nukes will finally die.

This video (about 15 minutes) is about China's BYD's recent breakthrough's in sodium battery chemistry that are focused on large scale storage. Yesterday I read in May CA got 51% of its electricity from Solar/Storage. Up from 1% in 2012. A massive increase. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqMq...

This is why fission nuclear is dead. Once storage becomes this cheap, there's no reason to build nukes. They're hard to build, difficult to manage, vulnerable to attack and the waste problem is thus far unsolved.
