NEW | California just reached a world-first solar milestone Over HALF (51%) of electricity generation across the whole month of May came from solar power. Battery storage is the big difference maker, enabling California to push the share of solar generation to this level.

Battery? some way of storing solar energy to use without a visible sun? that's ridiculous, it would take millions of years to convert the energy of the sun into plants, feed them to giant animals, bury them under tons of pressure, and wait for them to be ready to be sucked from a big straw in Texas.
Battery storage has transformed California's power system. Batteries now shift huge amounts of solar power from midday into the evening peak. This chart shows utility scale only (no rooftop), but it's a good illustration of just how effective it is. bsky.app/profile/nico...
Nicolas FulghumAnother massive battery storage record in California (CAISO) yesterday, March 29 🔋 At 7pm, batteries reached 12.3 GW of output, meeting 42.8% of demand! And it's not just a short peak anymore. Batteries stayed above 20% of grid supply from 5.50pm to 9.35pm, almost four hours.

This video (about 15 minutes) is about China's BYD's recent breakthrough's in sodium battery chemistry that are focused on large scale storage. Yesterday I read in May CA got 51% of its electricity from Solar/Storage. Up from 1% in 2012. A massive increase. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqMq...
