It is my contention that the UK should be a global leader, willing to invest to make progress rather than a weak follower having to inevitably pay to import technology it fails to develop, giving up on any economic benefits alongside the political capital.

I'll make the same point I always make - 33% of global emissions come from countries with similar emissions to ours. We can't all be like 'nah, not for us to do'. You can make the point that we don't specifically have to be a leader on this stuff but we also can't massively backtrack.

This is such a myopic position to argue from. Yes, my contribution to pollution is negligible, but there are 7 billion people on the planet and if everyone takes an uncaring position we are doomed. Search "tragedy of the commons" if you haven't heard of it.

Each state that takes the attitude that their contribution to Net Zero won't make a critical difference contributes to increased climate change. Each state that embraces Net Zero, however small their contribution, becomes a part of the solution and encourages others.

I disagree. There's loads of ways to combat climate change with other approaches We have a suffocating planning regime that makes onshore wind and cheap transmission very difficult and similar problems in regulation for nuclear We apply very high standards for domestic emissions but not on imports

We favour putting the cost of transmission on bill payers rather than general taxation that causes negative operating leverage because peoplenand industry cut back on energy usage We refuse to develop our own oil and gas even though it is less carbon intensity than importing from Norway

You appear to be interpreting Net Zero as a specific set of policies and proposals rather than as a strategic aim that any of your preferred strategies also fall within.
