Should you vote for the Opportunity Party?⁉️For a while now, folks have been asking me that exact question. I've been surprised to hear from Green voters who are considering voting TOP. I have publicly said I don't like TOP. I view them as centrists who want to appease both the left and right - andwww.emilywrites.co.nz

I love Josh's writing, and this is excellent! I would love to read more about this issue of people not voting for Greens because they are too woke. I feel like that's not quite it. Lately I have been thinking it's because we don't look like MONEY.

@zoomoo.bsky.social I'd be interested in knowing about that section of society too, whenever we get polls on policy Green policy (not labeled as such) is incredibly popular, I do wonder if "too woke" is a significant factor in voting intentions though

I think some of it will be nothing to do with "wokeness" and more to do with a lack of civics education. I've met multiple people for example who prefer Green to Labour but voted Labour because they thought that the party with the largest vote share got to form the government

I also think it's a sort of long-ingrained idea of what authority and leadership look like - and we don't look like it. But even with James Shaw we had the same issue!

I can think of someone I know of, very environmentally focused. Also working class bloke who has come out of a bad relationship in which it appears a woman has done him over. Has voted NZF in the past. Also Green in the past. But doesn't like overt wokeness. Enthusiastically embracing Opportunity

I can't stand the Opportunity Party, but I'm starting to realise that they might be hoovering votes from National and NZF voters who find the wild pivot to the right rather unpalatable.

I actually think the working class bloke with working class ethics but who feels disenfranchised by woke tertiary-educated women (not the bloke above, but adjacent to him) is where NZF is getting a lot of its votes. I know that sort of guy too.

People have a long memory and aren't always rational so some (occasionally petty) reasons I am aware of: homeopathy, Morris Dancing, anti-vaccine sentiment, tree-hugging, Palestine, climate change, anti-Primary Industries, keyboard Greens rather than action Greens.

I was referencing Kedgely with the anti-vaxx sentiment comment but I didn't realise she was also one of the main proponents of this: "We've even managed to break down the stereotype of Morris dancing, mung beans and sandals."

I agree. But the main part of the post was solid on what Opportunity is up to. It was a good analysis. I am voting Green again. I still like Labour but I don’t see any vision there at all.

I haven't said much about them since the pile on a while back because I don't want to come off as a supporter (I'm not) I just think criticism should be based on facts not vibes

Encourage your Right leaning friends to vote for them, and your Left leaning friends not to My missus was asking about them, which indicates that there's a real movement out there

@byroncclark.bsky.social it's interesting watching the polls because it's unclear where there support is coming from, looks like shaving a bit off Labour and a bit off National, and likely getting support from people who typically don't vote nudging the % total down slightly for all other parties

I read their stuff… interesting. I’m curious as to what happens next. Typically centrist parties unmoored to a social agenda (e.g. Leftist) end up reorienting around greed / power once they have power. Their mantra of “practical solutions” sounds great, but the Q is always: Practical for whom?
