Ooh interesting! I’m curious about this. I’ve never seen this take before and I’ve spent literal decades hating Rodimus Prime as a result. How did Kup cause it, if you don’t mind me asking?

I have been screaming this exact thing for decades and I've always felt I was going crazy. Like "Hey, Kup! Why don't you come and help Hot Rod?! Three on One is better odds!"

YUUUUUUP. Although canon is still the better timeline because someone needed to fire Optimus after ghosting his girlfriend for 4 million years, crushing Grapple's hopes and dreams, and playing basketball instead of doing shit.

Within earshot of Kup, Hot Rod explains his plan: to help Optimus stop/end Megatron. This war had been going on for 4+ million years, and literally everyone else was content to stand around and let their fates be decided by an honor duel. But Kup, who knew Hot Rod was inexperienced, warned him away

Kup was literally okay leaving the fate of Optimus and everyone else to a fucking honor duel. Even the Decepticons understood the odds better and everyone did their best to stop Optimus as he initially hunted Megatron in Autobot City (except poor Thrust obvy)

So Kup was content to stand and watch Optimus fight an honor duel AND let Hot Rod run in by himself. If Kup had given a shit, he could have GONE WITH HOT ROD and the two could have come up with a plan to strafe Megatron while he was fighting Optimus.

Letting a man fight his own battles alone is the very definition of toxic masculinity. Imagine how much differently things would have gone if Kup had gone with Hot Rod & formed a plan. Hell, he could've just followed Hot Rod and waited for THIS moment & hit Megs with a headshot from behind?

But it's fine actually because Rodimus Prime was a WAY better letter than Optimus Prime ever was. Rodimus did more in a few years than Optimus managed in over 4 million. Optimus may have been everyone's dad to start, but Rodimus was the dad who STEPPED UP.

I LOVE this take! Never considered it! But I pose a query....it was always my understanding, & correct me plz if I'm wrong...but wasn't it mentioned or implied in either an early draft, or storyboard, that Hot Rod & Kup had been separated by the battle and only Hot Rod could reach Prime?

So I have heard there were storyboarded or scripted shots that depict Kup fighting the Insecticons at the same time but if it's not in the movie, did it really happen? The audio design for the scene makes it seem like Kup was just off screen when delivering "Stay Away, that's Prime's fight."

At the very least, Kup was certainly close enough to hear Hot Rod when he said "I've got to help Prime." If Kup WAS too tied down to help, he should have asked Hot Rod to stay and help him. Kup refusing to ask for help, I'd argue is also toxic masculinity, and also to blame for Optimus's death

Of course- and I love Rodimus, don't get me wrong -it's a lot easier to Get Stuff Done in (relative) peacetime than it is during an absurdly protracted period of war.

This IS the same faction that raised NO questions when, in the last honor duel they fought to decide the war, Megatron suddenly had the very specific powers of all of his troops at once. And they were ready to honor the terms when Prime lost. ...there's a reason it's a 4 million year war.

I’ve long loved Kup but you’re spot on about him just kind of shrugging and letting Hot Rod run off on his own. And don’t feel dumb. This was genuinely enlightening. I’d never considered the honor duel aspect. I think I’m due for a rewatch.
