Yes the court is the biggest, clearest, most enduring victory by far (though also something of a fluke of timing/luck.)

Alexander Ross

Three nominees to the Supreme Court. That's a political success, and that's the political success that Hillary Clinton voters were warning everybody about.

Yes, the Hillary campaign warned us about the Supreme Court. And she also told us we could "never, ever" get Medicare for All. And let's not forget "my good friend Henry Kissinger," and the campaign ad featuring Brent Scowcroft. Hillary was supposed to be the Dem candidate, not GOP!

She also correctly identified all the trumpets!

McConnell wouldn't let Obama replace Scalia. You think if Bader-Ginsburg had resigned under Obama that McConnell would have let the Dems have the seat? I think we would have had a new, "Presidents in their second term can't appoint ANY Justices." You think Kennedy's resignation was a fluke?

And McConnell’s willingness to refuse to fill Scalia’s seat, may both of them rot in hell forever.

On the one hand, not luck as the primary cause is parliamentary shenanigans from McConnell. On the other, as it relates to Trump and Trumpism, specifically, 100% luck.

A little "luck", and a lot of "Mitch McConnell rewriting the procedural norms to be whatever benefited MAGA the most in that moment "

Then the Hilary voters (myself included) should have done a better job unifying the party after the nomination so that she could win. You don’t get to say if I would’ve won the Supreme Court would have been different. No shit but you didn’t win and that is on you!

yes, three is timing/luck...but conservative control of the Court for the last 50 years is not timing/luck. It's cuz the Senate is biased in favor of red states & does not accurately reflect the American people. Dem Sens have represented more Americans over the last 25 yrs but rarely had majority.

Trumpism benefited from that. McConnellism created it.

You need to own your support for the spoiler in 2016. I hope to God you’ve learned something.

The dismantling of the regulatory state is also a long term conservative goal

When you don't play hardball , you get you ass handed to you.

The cheating wasn’t a fluke…

This whole " operation " is not a fluke . Heritage Foundation , A.L.E.C. etc , got us Project 2025 , a culmination of 90 years of right wing pushback.

Nobody should focus on redebating the past--the relevance of this fact now is that the Democrats *must* take back the Senate and they *must* refuse to confirm any Trump nomination just like Republicans did to Obama.

Not really. bsky.app/profile/west...

I disagree slightly. My American history teacher drummed it into my head: Every election is about the courts. Every single election. Any time someone to the left of center sits the election out for reasons, they are handing another few dozen appointments to the enemy.

not something to be proud of

If he gets to pick his judges, nothing you can do, folks. "Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is. I don't know." 🫨

*and fraud

…or hubris on the part of an elderly justice

I dunno, I'm pretty convinced the prior Trump administration forced Justice Kennedy out before he really wanted to go

What would the country look like today if Clinton had been able to fill 2-3 spots (assuming Kennedy chose to retire when he did)?

Judicial reform needs to be task one. Anything else will just be shot down by SCOTUS.

Merrick Garland, you might recall, was supposed to be a Barack Obama Supreme Court appointment in 2016. Senate Republicans held that up almost a year so Trump could fill the seat instead. when you're spotted 1 like that, it's not really luck

Ответ для codehappy lives!

Well, we dodged that bullet then. Merrick Garland is a human wet blanket.

Washerman Schultz(sp) totally crooked, helped to cost Hillary the election. Time to move on. Bernie should have become president in 2016 or 2020.

Not a fluke, calculated. McConnell refused hearings for Garland because it was an election year and then rushed Barrett after voting had started.

If Roger Stone and WikiLeaks didn't coordinate to save him from the Access Hollywood story, we aren't having his conversation

Cheating to acquire one of those seats doesn't land on my definition of 'victory'. 🙅

And Mitch McConnell’s sliminess.

Публикация скрыта фильтром безопасности.

Thinking that the SCOTUS problem cannot really trace to a "fluke of timing/luck". Mitch McConnell was the first to implement Trumpian strategy/tactics via the cynically engineered Gorsuch appointment. He would have tried the same if Justice Ginsburg had retired during the Obama administration...

This was NOT a fluke. I mean when are we going to come clean w/the corruption w/in politics that led to Trumps first win. Honestly - Comey, the salivating MSM, Bernie BS (he couldn’t and was NEVER fucking winning the Dem Nomination).

Tonight's show has a theme: the Administration is more of a criminal organization than government, with protection money, fraud, bribery, fear of violence, lies & more, but using the levers of government to enforce it all.

McConnell forcing ACB thru after making the people decide 1 year before 2016 is not luck.

Ответ для twoifbyland

In general, no it was not luck. For Trump, specifically, it absolutely was luck.

And theft by McConnell.

Timing that mitch mcconnell manipulated to meet his purposes

You want votes? Earn them! This blaming the voters narrative of yours has gotten old and won't work anymore.

Ответ для I am Sofa King

I am never sure when you’re going to pop up. Always a pleasure to know your point of view is well represented. 😘

Ответ для I am Sofa King

Fuck—and I cannot stress this enough—you. You deserve that blame, yet it sounds like despite how many people have been harmed or killed, you refuse to own the part you played. Grow up and vote like a goddamned adult who can count, not a spoiled, privileged child.

Ответ для I am Sofa King

You are sofa ked in da hed

Ответ для I am Sofa King

I’m of two minds here. On the one hand, it’s everyone’s right to not vote if they don’t want to. On the other, a leftist who won’t vote for a center-left candidate can’t complain when their far-right opponent wins & enacts far-right policies. You get what you vote for, even if you don’t vote.

Ответ для tomhoefwrites

The 2-party system sucks, but that’s what we have right now. If a Dem centrist loses the far-right candidate will win, so a no-vote for the Dem is basically a vote for the far right. That person is saying they’d rather have a fascist in power than a left-leaning moderate. Well, congrats. You got it.

Ответ для tomhoefwrites

There both far-right and I don't vote for the right.

Ответ для I am Sofa King

First of all, I didn’t give specific examples. My example has a moderate/centrisrt and someone on the far right. Second, if we’re talking specifically Trump/Harris, Harris is decidedly not far-right, so now you’re just creating a fictional reality in your head to justify your decisions.

Ответ для tomhoefwrites

shes far right off the concervative scale offf the nazi scale alkl the way to the blood soaked fasciust maniac side of the scalk. ANd so are the rtest of you poerverts. You ran on teling us to go to bed and take drugs! You wanto rapoe us.

Ответ для tomhoefwrites

Harris was absolutely right of center. She promised to be a continuation of Biden complete with genocide, corporatism, and no fundamental change. That's a conservative platform.

Ответ для I am Sofa King

Look, it’s your individual right to decide that & feel that way. My only criticism to anyone would be: you don’t get to complain about Trump’s specific actions & court appointments, if your non-vote for Harris helped put him in power. And maybe you don’t complain about Trump. 🤷‍♂️

Ответ для tomhoefwrites

Harris didn't win a primary. Harris didn't attempt to earn my vote. Your party is the reason trump has been President twice, so save your BS.

Ответ для I am Sofa King

It’s not my party. I’m an independent. But technically? Political parties can choose their candidates anyway they want. They don’t HAVE to have a national primary. There was no law outlawing a party just choosing their candidate at a political convention.

Ответ для tomhoefwrites

And the electorate in a lot of places is swinging further to the left a lot faster than the mainstream the DNC, that’s for sure. Which moves the so-called “center” further left, too.

Ответ для tomhoefwrites

This just oozes of privilege. I hope the people in ice concentration camps, minorities losing their scholarships and military promotions, and trans people without rights can appreciate how clear your conscious is not voting for Harris aka genocidal Biden 2.0. Sleep tight.

Ответ для I am Sofa King

"Even if my one vote could have prevented a fascist from becoming president, I would not have voted for the center left candidate because it is more moral for me to *only* vote for a candidate I completely agree with than to prevent the murder of Renee Good, Alex Pretti, Joan Sebastien Guerrero..."

Ответ для I am Sofa King

You're an unserious asshole. I know because in 2000, *I* was that unserious asshole. "No difference between Gore & Bush," I said, as I volunteered for & voted for Nader. Had Gore won, no Iraq war, no John Roberts & Alito on the court & none of their horrible decisions. I learned my lesson.

Ответ для Hank Hoffman

Imagine that one vote stopping the appointment of three justices who have turned the Supreme Court into a civil rights gutting institution. For POC, women, LGBTQ+, children, immigrants, children of immigrants... Sofa has purity, I guess. And we all live with the carnage.

Ответ для westvillagecrank

LOL!

Ответ для Hank Hoffman

I love your voter outreach. I believe you can get trump elected to a third term with your poise and civility. 🤡

Ответ для I am Sofa King

Yeah that attitude is pure decadence. And the decadent government we now have reflects the decadence of all the voters and potential voters.

Ответ для Rams and Hoosiers

Democracy is "decadent" to you? What authoritarian country are you from?

Ответ для I am Sofa King

No, the attitude that you can just sit out an election if you don’t like the choices and hold no responsibility for the outcome.

Ответ для Rams and Hoosiers

You really hate democracy.

Ответ для I am Sofa King

No, I hate adult children who refuse to accept responsibility or consequences for their actions or can’t think past their own nose.

Ответ для Rams and Hoosiers

My vote, my choice. Go move to Russia.

Ответ для Rams and Hoosiers

mmm hmmm

Well, that’s what happens when the Dems call working, flyover country voters deplorable. The DNC still doesn’t get it. They are still eating from the same corporate troughs as the RNC.

Didn’t like 3 conservative justices also retire strategically in the last 25 years compared to just 1 liberal

Ответ для Burgerman

RBG stayed too long, she should have retired when Biden or Obama could appoint her replacement.

Ответ для Patrick Prodhon

Yeah but still extreme reform would still be needed even if she retired correctly, conservative values need to be pushed out of the Supreme Court entirely

Ответ для Patrick Prodhon

She died before Biden became President.

Ответ для Andrew Soukup

She should not have gone to the wedding and died of Covid :p. A frail geriatric like her had no business at a super spreader event.

Ответ для Patrick Prodhon

Or White Americans could not be complete degenerates and force a person doing her life’s dream to retire. Your blame is absurd.

Ответ для A Man Has No Name 🇺🇦

Term limits. And that kind of job requires strategizing, not living your dream life blissfully ignoring the consequences.

Ответ для Patrick Prodhon

Easy to say when you’re not the one taking the bullet.

Ответ для A Man Has No Name 🇺🇦

If you want the job, you need to accept the uneasy part of it. The more power, the more responsibility. Hold your officials to account.

Ответ для Patrick Prodhon

Yeah nothing in the job says resign because Democrats need you to. Like I said, big words when it’s someone else.

Ответ для A Man Has No Name 🇺🇦

And as we well know, the job description is always complete. If you don’t believe people holding the higher offices should have a sense of responsibility regarding the values they purport to represent, then be done with representative democracy.

Ответ для Patrick Prodhon

Her job is to be an impartial jurist. You being pissed she wasn’t a team player is part of the problem.

Three thoughts I always think about 1) unforgivable that Biden era did not prepare a successor the four years leading up and 2) even though I hate him as much as anybody, but his pushing through regardless of facts is a political skill that is successful and 3) garlands approach was the worst.

The timing might have been a fluke, but the willingness of Republicans to dispense with norms and protocols to steal 2 Supreme Court seats was an unvarnished power grab by a radicalized party happy to destroy democracy in order to establish permanent minority rule.

I'll agree that 'trumpism' only benefitted from those 3 openings rather than manipulated them into being, but there was manipulation- by turtle man mitch.

Also, some of it the work of the Still Definitely Alive Mitch McConnell.

Luck had nothing to do with it, or anything, unless you like your thinking magical.

I was part of a Bible study group in 2012 and questioned why after all the years of the "church" telling us we needed to vote for Christians, why I now needed to vote for a Mormon. I woman stood up, put her finger right to my face and said "It's about the courts. We need control of the courts".

Ответ для Liz Knapp

It took me a year or two to really understand what she was saying. And here we are. I had almost always voted Dem and just thought I'd play devil's advocate. I left the group after that meeting.

Mitch McConnell blocking Obama from appointing and rushing through Barrett is not the result of timing or a fluke

So Bernie couldn't bring himself to say Michael Harrington was right.

Timing/luck but also the hubris of RBG.

Appoint young, push out before they die after beating cancer.

J

Sorry Chris.. a well funded and intentional campaign that maintains attention over decades to take advantage of probabilities just is not a fluke in any sense.

Not for long 😌

I can cut RBG some slack on this, she (as did most liberals at the time) thought that Hillary would win 2016 easily and she could retire at her leisure in 2017.

Ответ для Unique Liker

Sometime I wonder, if Clinton had won in 2016 but didn't regain control of the senate, if McConnell would have been able to keep 1 or 2 SCOTUS seats open for an entire presidential term

And pure political gamesmanship and corruption

Just wait til Alito and Thomas retire in 2028, so Trump can name a couple youngsters to replace them.

Yes, like the luck of a octogenarian with terminal cancer not resigning when her party could replace her. How unlucky.

Ответ для Kev O’Content Jr.

huge mistake on her part but honestly it was an even bigger mistake the Democratic Party couldn’t find a way to fix the Supreme Court with their mandate in 2021

Ответ для Burgerman

They refused to take any steps. The ways have and are still apparent. People like Biden were more concerned with being friendly still with people like Lindsey Graham then actually fixing systemic problems with our system. They wanted the system to work somehow while riddled with maga tumors…

Ответ для Kev O’Content Jr.

👆 found the Republican

Ответ для peacefulcoexistnce

Ответ для Kev O’Content Jr.

absolutely correct. we needed people in that moment that actually wanted change

Ответ для Burgerman

At least we got a four year reprieve from hell. We’ll always have that!

Except for Mitch McConnell refusing to let Obama nominate Merrick Garland. That was a travesty (that led to a tragedy).

And GOP fuckery…let us not forget that either!

"For EVIL to triumph ..." Everyone knows that quote by now EXCEPT trump's stooges and cronies and cultists who have been brainwashed into NOT even hearing it, let alone thinking about it (or anything else for that matter)! Don't worry republicans, you're in, at least one of those 3 categories!

It’s definitely a huge success for the extreme right: Heritage Foundation, Federalist Society, Atlas Network and all their other intertwined christofascist orgs. They have almost solidified their death grip on democracy through some luck and their useful idiot trump and the quislings in the GOP.

Luck. Hmmm.

You say fluke / timing. I say CHEATING.

Let’s also not overlook the fact that the Dems could have replaced RBG at an opportune time…not all luck/timing.

I disagree on “fluke of timing/luck.” Scalia died unexpectedly during Obama’s term, and McConnell stole that appointment. Kennedy appears to have made a deal to retire during Trump 1.0. Ginsberg died late in Trump 1.0 and McConnell jammed in ACB. Rs seized every opportunity and Ds dropped every ball

if political and corrupt mean the same thing

Exactly. It wasn’t Trump’s success. He was just the stooge in the seat. The credit, or more like blame, should go to Mitch. He was the man behind stalling Garland’s nomination in 2016 and rushing Barrett’s through the Senate in 2020.

With hindsight of course, but what could the Dems have done at the time that Obama was denied a vote on his nomination? Anything?

they’re also the least popular they have ever been and are looking at potential reform/expansion

Yeah, and Mitch being a Bitch
