It's math. Potential revenues, costs, margins, assumed digital conversion rates, time, focus and energy. It'll be up to the players as to whether or not that math was correct.

In a world where consoles potentially cost $1k+ the focus shifts from trying to attract the mass market to targeting only the most affluent with the least price sensitivity and highest preference for convenience.

I don't think a lot of people have picked up this last point. Sony has directly said they no longer see a path to grow the market and are looking for ways to further monitize their core users instead. It's a pretty big shift in strategy, and probably one that will leave a lot of gamers behind.

Yep. They spelled it out in an interview. Better monetize the user base and increase prices.

And then one by one the user base shrinks because they don‘t want to deal with it. Why does this always happen? How do they never learn?

Such a short sighted plan. I mean, if this is truly what Sony believes, it makes more sense to just exit the gaming space altogether and invest that money elsewhere You could argue they see value in their IP and want to monetize that, but this isn’t Nintendo. Why continue at all with a dying market

Which interview? I don’t recall seeing it, but I miss a lot of things.

"For the next-generation platform, rather than simply serving as an alternative to PCs, we aim to deliver value that is unique to PlayStation." "...we are focusing more on monetizing our user base" "We expect to recover the costs... through revenue generated from PS Plus" morganfreeman.gif

I honestly have so many physical games to play that I don’t even need to support the next generation whenever that happens. I have supported this medium of entertainment for over 35 years. They are pushing me out with these decisions and others like me.

I initially thought that I’d shift to my other hobbies like board games but then I remembered that modern board games cost $300-$500 each for ~20 or 30 hours of gameplay. It’s funny how we can value things so differently.

Can the console model even survive at these high prices though? Or are they betting the affluent market will spend proportionally higher on MTX, games, etc. Like at this point Helix is going to be so expensive I doubt devs will make dedicated versions for that platform, if it even has an SDK.

As I understand the point, the gamble is that they'll eke out a living off of the serious gadget hounds, streamers, arcade bars, and other wealthy clients. It's about squeezing the audience they have, not getting the people they don't. The Western Comics Gambit.

I do not think the current model could survive if hardware is $1.2k+, no. I also think all the current kerfuffle around exclusives and all that is more desperation hoping things will just magically wotk out somehow than anythjng.

Agree with you there. With these hardware prices and game budgets, attempting exclusivity is pure madness.

Sonys proposition is "we are the best and we can dictate the market." and how much does that affect their current very vocal fan base? Can they afford to live off marketing hype without their consumers advocating for them? Love to see how it all pans out.

Everyone’s chasing “Yield Over Volume” since the pandemic. There’s no way this is sustainable.

Console video games are becoming ham radio.

I used to have dozens, if not hundreds, of cartridges but when I moved to a different country i couldn't take them with me; a digital library would have allowed me to. Also, I felt really bad about having all this plastic. Everywhere else we're cutting down on plastic use but not media?

Well, it’s their hill to climb if they think the line on the graph has dipped below the point of no return. Frankly I tbink they should be more worried about actually convincing people they need new consoles when the last ones only real selling point was faster loading times

Sony at least has been definitely going that way for some years, hence their focus on ultra high budget Hollywood-looking games. Every industry inevitably chases the wealthiest customers because that's what you do when you want to maximize your profit (also see: memory vendors right now).

Hi Matt, for the past two days many people have been claiming that Sony's official figures on the percentage of digital game sales are being manipulated. They say it mainly consists of low-priced indie games and DLC.

Does this mean they're expecting component prices to (at least) stay this high for most of the generation? Or are they trying for a market where they can keep their own prices this high even if component prices drop?

Good question!
