God, I loved Harlan Ellison. He was often an asshole, but no one got to tread on him, not without everyone hearing about it. And most of the time he was exactly right! Can you imagine what he'd have to say about all of the theft by A.I.?? He'd drop dead again from apoplexy!

Before watching the video, I wanted to ask you if it was the first question you'd receive from people, for mine would be "how to write well?" but after watching it, I'm wondering which one I should ask first

Learning to write well can be a nebulous process, largely because what allows writing to stand out is a combination of craftsmanship and exploring what makes it distinct to you. My best advice if you are starting out is to make a list of what you like, then try to break down WHY you like it!

Would you say fanfiction is a good way to hone one's skills before moving to professional stuff? I know a few authors (for example: Naomi Novik, co-creator of AO3) who started this way. (I mean I like dragons because DRAGONS! obviously :p)
