I remember DeBlasio trying to ban ride hailing on behalf of medallion owners. Now, Mamdani should propose a rule that when this tech is ready, ride hailing should prioritize citizen-owned cars so former drivers can own and operate the robots that replace them

The biggest contributor to urban traffic is singly-occupied vehicles. Now they want to add fleets of cars empty half the time.

Genuinely do not understand who thinks that adding more vehicles to the roads will somehow reduce our dependency on vehicles. Ffs everyone could have hover cars and rush-hour would still suck.

I used to own my own car and drive where I need to go. But I guess we're headed to where I have to pay some company crazy high prices to take me. Car ownership is being out priced for citizens. Where are the 'freedumb' boys?

It's Ubers entire business model, burn through VC money keeping their prices low while they wait for self driving, then rack up the price of their monopoly, make $$$ and no pesky drivers to pay.

The last time I took a taxi the driver honked all over the place, drove on the opposite lane (crossing a double yellow line) because he couldn't wait a few seconds, and drove over the speed limit. I prefer a Waymo 100%

That’s pretty much the story of all tech, going back to the invention of agriculture. You (read your minions) spent less time/energy foraging and hunting and more time could be devoted to conquering neighboring tribes. The objective of all tech is to make accumulation of resources cheaper.

They are stealing SECOND jobs from people. The greed never ends.

The only way these things could cut traffic would be if all traffic was driverless and they were all managed by the same system.

In what irrational alternative universe were these “expected to cut traffic”? Walkable and bikeable neighborhoods cut auto traffic. More convenient, frequent, and reliable public transit cuts auto use. Mixed-use developments near transit hubs cut auto use. More cars, driverless or not, don’t.

That is because this amusement park style of transportation is ridiculous. Maybe I would get in one if I were stuck in Death Valley.

Only tech bros would find a way to make traffic worse while also decreasing the number of drivers on the road.

I will never get into a driverless vehicle. That would assume I trust whoever programmed the thing.
