My question would be, shouldn't the IRS then focus on auditing those precise taxpayers where they can hope to make the biggest gains with the least amount of manpower?

The IRS collects far more revenue than it takes to run the agency. One reason why DOGE added billions to the deficit.

With the current headcount , we’re unable to collect past due taxes and unable to process returns in a timely manner so what do they do? Mandate that employees increase speed and sacrifice accuracy. This administration doesn’t know what they’re doing.

This piece is incredibly validating for my recent dealings with them over a cheque they "accidentally" sent me then demanded back months later with penalties, so many hours wasted on the phone, along with gaslighting.

The IRS went thru 10 years of cuts until late in Bidens admin. These and current cuts affect ALL taxpayers. Flags for account fraud, false or not, etc, gets thrown in a backlog. It sits there, with Mary Taxpayer unable to access refunds until cleared. This may take YEARS

I think the idea is they break. Rich guys hate the IRS for obvious reasons.

That is what the rich want, an agency that can only collect payroll taxes from the middle class while the rich and big business can cheat with impunity.

This is, unfortunately, the wishful philosophy of the managerial class in this age. "Do more with less" is one of the prime drivers of enshittification.

All the tax cheats (like Trump) love this.

I mean, that makes sense. If you cut back the workforce, there is no one to do the job and it's incredible that very simple fact is not addressed.
