it's a big club and you ain't in it

Lee Hurley

The Times, one of the leading voices when it comes to 'protecting women and girls' calling a man who assaulted his young pregnant girlfriend, said he would rape the kids if he was a teacher and called for child sex abuse porn to be legal, 'brilliant'

the outpouring of grief for a man who held some pretty loathsome views (or who at least expressed his views in a loathsome way) is pretty sickening 'but he was a lovely man outside of his hateful rhetoric!'

“Magda Goebbels made a great strudel”

Apart from all the appalling stuff which I don’t need to repeat I just don’t think he was that gifted. He seems to be our own Charlie Kirk.

Ответ для NG

coming out with bigoted takes for money peppered with sub-Jim Davidson jokes is not especially hard if you're a bigot... or a sociopath

Ответ для Chaminda Jayanetti

Also I get they want to pay tribute to a colleague but a whole page dedicated to a hack?

Radio 4 just did a section warmly remembering him and the one quote I caught them play was just him being outright sexist and racist, saying radio 4 was just whinging women and afro-caribbeans now. Really feels like it was picked by someone who wanted to undermine the whole segment.

He was a funny writer, I disagreed with him on most things but always laughed when I read his stuff. The po faced left loathed him and he wore that as a badge of honour.

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

I mean it's cool that you're happy for everyone to know that everything's a game to you but I don't know why you're telling me

Ответ для Chaminda Jayanetti

No everything isn’t a game. I’m telling you because I thought I’d add some balance to the wokefest.

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

Having a problem with blatant misogyny and racism is a wokefest now, is it?

Commenting on articles you haven’t read is.

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

One article telling me he's brilliant versus the last twenty-something years of him constantly putting out articles where he's a wanker; no, you're right, that one article is definitely going to change my mind

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

I wasnt commenting on an article.

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

sod off

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

You like bigots as long as the bigotry isn't pointed at you.

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

I’m not sure you’ve done him any favours; essentially, you’ve just told us he got a kick out of insulting people. That’s not a good thing, is it?

Ответ для David Pattie

Essentially I’ve done nothing of the kind.

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

Honestly, you’ve just told us he liked inspiring hatred. That’s not a good thing, is it?

Ответ для David Pattie

Honestly I haven’t told you that. You’re not very good at this.

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

Upsetting the po- faced left was his badge of honour. That’s really rather clear; the subtext is pretty much the text.

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

What did he write that was funny? What’s your favourite line of his?

Ответ для Alexander Williams

Lines without context is part of the issue here, he wasn’t a one line gag comedian. I’d guarantee almost everyone commenting here never read an entire article.

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

I’ve read two or three though they mostly seemed kind of dull. Which is a good column by him then?

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

Wanting to shag kids obviously isn’t a red line for you. Good to know. 🚩

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

what a riot, eh. which of these jokes do you find funniest?

Ответ для Chris Hind

They’re not jokes.

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

didn't you "always laugh when you read his stuff"? so, the Auschwitz one or the one about black people, which one gets you chortling?

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

Fair enough. I always skipped his pieces as I found his writing to be overwrought and quite boring due to the tone remaining the same no matter the topic. He always seemed to try and be scandalous for some reason.

E

Which one did you laugh at, the one where he discusses noncing teens? Or the the one where says CSAM should be legal?

Ответ для Mark Byrnes

Did you laugh when he got a police caution for domestic violence?

I've never seen more deference to "not speaking ill of the dead" than this week. Which seems to translate to "don't make me defend this wife beating nonce I like cause he was nice to me".

Ответ для CactusPens

Yeah I think saying this is not speaking ill of the dead is being kind to the people doing it. They just liked him.

It's the Can't Understand Non-bigoted Talent club.

A guardian writer just wrote that they knew him pretty well and like why would you as a guardian writer be on first names bases with that dude.

Ответ для RobPatch

Because he wrote for the observer for years

Ответ для Dan Davies

Sorry not the observer the actual guardian

Ответ для RobPatch

Because they're all besties and regularly swap into each other papers to alternate who gets to write the most heinous shit. The whole 'political slant' of the newspapers is kayfabe for 50 people to ruin the lives of normal people in this country.

A club that seems like it’s all privately educated Oxford debating society chums with the souls of 4Chan Pepe the Frog posters.

Precisely this.

Ответ для Dexter Crisp

I bet they all got up to such japes, doing gak in The Groucho and being all "edgy".

If you demonise trans people the British media will forgive every terrible thing you ever did.

What's the driver behind the critical mass of career ambition/concern that means other people in public life feel the need to maintain friendships with guys like him?

Ответ для niallsmith

some of them are like him themselves. others presumably find him "funny" in person. ideological fellow-travellers. and then the "nothing matters" types for whom this is all just a game, a club

Ответ для Chaminda Jayanetti

Thanks. I just dont get it. You dont have to be a tedious scold to read that passage he wrote on why he cant be a teacher (among countless other examples) and just think this is someone you should have as little to do with as possible.

Ответ для niallsmith

the same people have a similar view of Julie Burchill. nothing matters except chummy bigotry

Ответ для niallsmith

most of them went to school or uni together, or were colleagues at one time. Its all a (very well paid) game, they're all playing characters. I'll pretend to be a centrist, you pretend to be a non... oh never mind, you just be yourself Rod

Ответ для Adam Brown

That is just so terrifyingly cynical (them, not you!) Really depressing

Strangest thing is "inimitable" for a representative of a highly standardized type! This is an effort to protect media employment of violent bigots.
