Appiah might be the one person in academic I loathe so much, I actively want him to fail. His theory and perspective make me dislike him as a person. His arguments often lack depth and pretend to be grounded in fairness but he is a Black man who has been tainted by the colonizer.

Worth a note here that at almost zero points does she critique the film _production_ e.g. the parts of making the movie that are not her lane by trade. She is absolutely in the pocket here, and her thoughts are informative, instructional, and well-presented.

One of the great things about this is she understands the text well enough to recognize what the director is doing with it, and speak to that directly. And all the people writing in to say well movies have to be dumbed down are just Wrong on the Internet. Movies are a sophisticated medium!

this is the hardest emotion for academics to convey online. when in grad school a professor said the paper I presented was the worst thing she had seen presented at the working group, she was both serious and also not mean.

my reviews are like "the manuscript as written is utter dogshit, but there's a great paper in here, trying to get out. let's do it by doing x y and z"

Ehh, I think we can all stand to be kinder, personally. And it's more productive that way. But it's also striking to see whose critical comments are deemed 'mean' vs 'productive.'

i think i try to separate my criticism of the work from the criticism of the person because a lot of reviews can be like "this thing sucks and you seem too stupid to fix it."

Once a very famous scholar said a litany of very nice things about my work and then closed w/, “but I think you are too smart to be seriously making X argument,” and it lives rent free in my head b/c I am unsure if it was an insult or a compliment. But I definitely kept working through that argument

Focusing on specific gaps, weak points, with suggestions on what would be needed to improve them > 'this is crap.' Though to be fair, at some point, with some writing, one just has to say "can't figure out what the author is arguing and not sure it's worthwhile."
