I've worked menial and service jobs my whole life, feeling like a tragic waste of potential. It is hard to unlearn the capitalist brainwashing that attaches our sense of personal worth to the dollar value we produce for people like Bezos and Musk.

The woman who cleans our house... She's been doing so for ten years. We've shared the changes in our lives, both good and painful. She has cared for our pets and grieved their deaths alongside us. I can't begin to understand the impetus to devalue that work.

This is wonderful and true. To the extent I worry about my kids' careers (all three do interesting, valuable work, w/varying incomes), it is all about saving money, building some stability in this scary fuckin' world... maybe these parents are also feeling that, idk.

I was laid off from a very well paid tech email type job and I've recently gotten a job doing early morning food delivery to restaurants, the only thing I could find. And actually I really like the work! It feels more real and impactful than anything I did in tech. If only it paid a living wage

i went to an ivy league art school 16 years ago and, despite achieving plenty of prestige among my peers, nobody pays a living wage for illustration! ive been a bike mechanic, an office admin, a sex worker, a figure drawing model; cleaning houses by far pays the best and is the most enjoyable.
